Best Leading Actress in a Play - Who gets the TONY?

I'm doubting that Rashad will take the TONY two years in a row, partly because of the show's quick demise. While I love Mary Louise Parker, her turn in RECKLESS wasn't TONY worth, IMO. The same can be said about Laura Linney. While I think she's a wonderful actress, her performance in SIGHT UNSEEN didn't stur anything inside of me.

I think the race is between Cherry Jones and Kathleen Turner. Both of these women deliver towering performances, but if I had to pick one, I'd say the TONY belongs to Turner.

Any other viewpoints?

I think the votes will go something like this:
1st place *winner*: Cherry Jones
2nd: Kathleen Turner
3rd: Laura Linney
4th: Phylicia Rasha
5th: Mary Louise Parker

I see Doubt sweeping the Play category. I think it will win BEST PLAY, BEST ACTOR (O'BYRNE), BEST ACTRESS (JONES), FEATURED ACTRESS (LENOX), BEST SET DESIGN OF A PLAY, AND BEST LIGHTING DESIGN OF A PLAY.

I want Cherry Jones to win, but I wouldn't mind a rare tie between her and Turner. Turner has her popular role(which she has gotten great reviews for) and her movie-star name working in her favor though......

I think DOUBT will take

ACTRESS - Jones
ACTOR - O'Byrne
F ACTRESS - Lennox
DIRECTOR - Hughes
BEST PLAY
It MAY take Best Lighting
but I am betting Glengary Glenn Ross takes SET!

I really, really think that out of the four actors from the show nominated, Lennox is the best bet of winning. She will beat out Ryan, in my opinion.

FOA, I hate to disagree...although Amy Ryan was decent, her show quite frankly, isn't. Id put my money on the far supierior production with a phenomanal actress who works harder ten minutes a night than most people do for 40 hrs a week!

I've seen both shows. And I have to say I like Lennox, but Ryan owns the stage at Studio 54. And, although show quality is important, that's not what they're being judged on. It's their performance that matters. I still think Ryan does a better job.

In terms of Jones v. Turner- yes, Jones' performance was nuanced and quietly powerful, but I think Turner deserves the TONY just as much- her Martha was really awe-inspiring.

The assertion that Lennox has "no chance" over Ryan is ludicrous. Both have a chance at it, but I would give the edge to Lennox. I think Lenox surprised a lot of people who only know her for her work in musicals. She walks out, and gives the sense of a character that has lived a life before walking out on stage. Ryan is always good, but voters may choose to reward her in the future when she's featured in a better-received production. (Even Ryan got taken down here and there in the reviews).

I would think that Lenox, is, if anything, the favorite to win at this point.

I don't know... I keep having a feeling that Turner could very well come away w/ the Tony in an unexpected win over Jones. She has a lot in her favor.

Ms. Jones will win, unless the Tony voters want to reward Ms. Turner for bringing people to the theatre (with THE GRADUATE, and-to a lesser extent-VIRGINIA WOOLF). If I were giving out the award, it would go to Mary-Louise Parker. Well, actually, it would be going to Natasha Richardson...BUT SHE WASN'T NOMINATED!

Cherry Jones, I believe, will win her second Tony two weeks from tonight.

Cherry Jones was very good. As was Kathleen Turner but I felt that Rashad was incomparable. I understand that she received the Tony last year but I felt as though her performance was breathtaking and deserves recognition (as does the whole production). Also - Lenox was very commanding but I feel like none of the Supporting Actresses come anywhere near Heather Goldenhersh. I had never seen her before and I was in awe. She has an impassioned rawness about her. I'm definitely rooting for Rashad and Goldenhersh.
