AAAAdam in Cabareeet. I almost fell out of my seat - literally. I was so proud of him. Seriously - who expected that? *golf claps*
(Oh, and Raúl, too. Perhaps perfect. Wish I saw HIM in person.)
One role in which the replacements were almost always good - Amneris in AIDA. I was equally impressed with both of the replacements I saw, and I know most of those I did not see were great as well - but props especially to Felicia and Lisa.
Also, Hunter in the Producers, Susan Egan in Cabaret, and yes, I'll say it - JLT in Wicked.

Thank you! I love Branagh, too. He's wonderful in a tiny little Irishman way.
Oh, and I forgot to mention George Hearn in Sweeney. But was he actually a replacement or just the touring guy? Eh, screw it, he's wonderful no matter what he was.
i'm in love with Shannon Durig in Hairspray right now... really, go see her!
"lest we forget, one of the best, most ballyhooed replacements in history--reba mcintyre for bernadette peters in Annie Get Your Gun. reba turned that show into a hot ticket must-see. "
And let us correctly remember that AGYG with Bernadette was a hot ticket must-see show. They did incredible business while Bernadette was in the role and the production managed to make back its investment in just a year - quite an accomplishment for a large scale musical on Broadway these days. Cheryl Ladd took over for Bernadette and the shows ticket sales did drop considerably. Reba's participation in the show (replacing Cheryl Ladd) did bring AGYG back to its former "hot ticket" self. While I was not at all a fan of her performance (I know I'm in the minority), I do recognize her affect on the box office. But let's not forget Bernadette opened and kept that show running very well for a year and a half. Reba did it for less than 6 months.

What about Lea Salgona as Eponine in Les Mis- she was incredible!
Brad Oscar- The Producers
Susan Egan- Cabaret
Rue McClanahan- Wicked

Christine Lahti in "The Heidi Chronicles"
Sally Field/Bill Irwin in "The Goat." They made that play incredible (or should I say--credible). How I wish it had opened with them; it would have gotten a much better reception.
Betty Buckly in "Sunset"
Victoria Clark in "Cabaret" (as Kost)
Larry Gatlin in "Will Rogers' Follies." He almost made that show watchable.

Speaking of Les Mis, Sutton Foster would have been the best Eponine EVER in a million years if she only weren't so damn tall. LOL but she sure sang the **** outta that role. So heartbreaking.

I thought Shaun Earl was the best Angel in Rent I'd ever seen when I saw him on Broadway. Sadly, I saw him do the door a few years later and his performance was completely different and vastly inferior to what he'd done at the Nederlander.
And I still maintain that Marcy Harriell was the best Mimi ever.
