#4re: re: re: re: Best Supporting Actress in a Musical?
Posted: 3/20/04 at 11:43amWell, I guess it is a good idea to see every musical before you decide. I never saw Taboo and I'm seeing Fiddler in May, so I guess I jumped the gate making my list.

The ladies from THE BOY FROM OZ look like good bets - Isabel Keating, Stephanie J. Block, and Beth Fowler.

The ladies of Oz were all fabulous, I agree. My only problem is, I wanted Hugh to sing every song in the show, just kidding.
The little boy playing young Peter really knocked my socks off also.

What about Karen Ziemba (spelling? is that even close?) from Never Gonna Dance?
Despite harsh reveiws and lack of audience following, I really enjoyed the show! Noah Racey is lovely and I though the supporting cast was great!
always,

Posted: 3/21/04 at 1:29pmyeah, VoiceofReason, you spelled it right. What about Karen Ziemba, guys? The show wasn't great, but I think she is very talented. I really enjoyed her performance.... Noah Racey's too, but I doubt he'll get a nomination.

Posted: 3/21/04 at 1:32pmI think the fact that the show collapsed sort of left Karen Ziemba in the ruins of it, left behind by the Tony race. I mean if you think about it, there have rarely been shows where someone was nominated for a Tony after the show closed. RARELY, not never, but RARELY.

Posted: 3/21/04 at 1:45pmNo one can rule anything out yet. I think by the time Caroline opens we'll have a larger sense of the nominations.

Posted: 3/21/04 at 1:49pmwhen do the nominations actually come out? I think it's mid-May. I'm sooo excited for Caroline, or Change. I need to get tickets.

Well, I also think it depends on how you define "rarely." By my count, out of last year's 40 nominated performers for the 2003 Tonys, 11 were from shows that had already closed by the time of the nominations. And one of them (Michele Pawk) even won in her category.
Granted, it's unusual that over 25% of the nominated actors were from shows that were gone by May. And most of them were from straight plays, some of which were scheduled limited runs. And there is no doubt that an actor's chances are increased when his or her show is still running, but I'm sure we're going to see examples this year of performers getting nominated from closed shows, though maybe not in the Featured Actress category. (Off the top of my head, Kevin Kline is probably a lock, and Ned Beatty seems likely.) It's certainly possible that musicals like Never Gonna Dance, Taboo and Big River will be recognized in at least one category.

My vote would go to Isabel Keating. Not only is she a wonderful singer and actress, but she also does a fabulous job portraying a legend. It's never an easy task to play someone famous, and play them well enough so that not only does the average audience believe it, but the fans of the original person are accepting of the portrayal.
I am quite a fan of Judy Garland, and I think Isabel really does Judy justice up there.
