re: Best/Worst Stunt Casting Ever?

I don't really have a best (only because I can think of better and worse for almost everyone I've seen stunt casted) but Melanie Brown was the worst Mimi in RENT I have ever seen. She was a disgrace.

I know this was just discussed a few months ago.

All worst:
But, former spice girl in RENT

and anyone who formerly was a member of a boyband.

David Hasselhoff....that one's pretty self-explanatory.

Patti Simcox has vertually no singing (well if you count maybe one line in "Summer Nights" and a little bit of chorus). So I don't know if anybody would be to stretched by that role.

re: Best/Worst Stunt Casting Ever?

Reba is probably the benchmark in terms of brilliant stunt casting. I still call this new Tony the "Reba Award."

Deborah Cox was also wonderful in Aida.

I loved Paige Davis in Chicago, but she's not really stunt-casting.

I don't think Vanessa Williams is either. A name yes, but she has musical talent, and been on Broadway twice.

Brooke Shields was stunt-casting in Grease. However, I think she's moved past that and become a really great Broadway actress. I hope we see more of her.

The worst is easy......no one will EVER be as bad as David Hasselhoff was in Jekyll and Hyde.

Dishonorable mention goes to Toni Braxton in Aida, Aaron Carter in Seussical, and Melanie Griffith in Chicago.

I agree about Reba. Best stunt casting ever.

I wish she would come back to Broadway soon.

re: Best/Worst Stunt Casting Ever?

At the time, I thought Tyne Daly as Mama Rose was stunt casting. I mean...CAGNEY AND LACEY? Boy was I WRONG!!! One of the best stage performances I've ever seen in my life. I still get chills remembering her EVERYTHING'S COMING UP ROSES and ROSE'S TURN. She made every line she spoke sound new and if it had been written just for her. Astonishing!

re: Best/Worst Stunt Casting Ever?

Flahooley --- You are so right. Daly delivered the best "acted" Rose I will probably ever see. I have very vivid memories too.

My favorite Daly moment was after Rose's Turn... she received thunderous applause... and then USED IT, as if Rose was hearing the applause in her mind. The performance of that number didn't end with the song... as a result, her applause got louder and louder and lasted a very long time. I remember thinking right then... She's got the Tony in the bag. Give it to her now. I'll never forget the expression on her face (in character) as the applause increased. It was thrilling and tragic all at once. At last, Mama Rose was THE STAR, at least in her own mind.

EDIT: In all honesty, I knew she had the Tony from her first entrance. She was "Rose" from start to finish. The best one I'll likely ever see.

re: Best/Worst Stunt Casting Ever?

Best: Reba in Annie Get YOur Gun and Kathy Lee Gifford in Putting it Together.

Worst: Most of the replacements in Grease!, Liza in Victor/Victoria, and Susan Lucci in Annie Get YOur Gun

Kathy Lee? Seriously?

I'm SO not a fan... but I didn't see her in it. (Honestly, you would've had to give me a comp.)

Seriously?

re: Best/Worst Stunt Casting Ever?

was reba a stunt? she was known as a dynamic stage presence long before broadway. and she had done several well reviewed film roles. i think people were shocked that they liked her, and that it highlighted that bern was mis-cast.
best post-modern stunt casting-madonna in SPEED THE PLOUGH -- her casting illustrated exactly the artistic/commercial bankruptcy that the play was talking about. the audience was in on a big joke that went beyond the proscenium.
yes, liza in V/V was pitiful.

re: Best/Worst Stunt Casting Ever?

i guess it was because she wasn't known in new york THEATUH circles, but reba was an obvious choice to anyone else.

re: Best/Worst Stunt Casting Ever?

I remember when she was cast, a lot of people screamed "Ick! Reba in a musical!". And then she turned out to be better than Bernadette in the role.

"Grease," the fourth revival of the season, is the worst show in the history of theater and represents an unparalleled assault on Western civilization and its values. - Michael Reidel

re: Best/Worst Stunt Casting Ever?

The worst for me would have to definitely be David Hasselhoff in Jekyll and Hyde and Michelle Williams in Aida. Yikes!

re: Best/Worst Stunt Casting Ever?

george hearn would be stunt casting as rose in gypsy--but he is the soul of broadway...
