I've never watched the Tonys with a host I didn't like... Except it's getting kind of boring with Neil Patrick Harris hosting it every year for the past 3 years -_-... But who do you guys think have been the best and worst?
NPH has been best and worst- lol. When he first did it it was funny, now he is just so smug and full of himself IMO.
I think Rosie ODonnell was the worst host. She did a great job supporting Broadway when she has her show. She never belonged on Broadway. I always had the feeling she treated Broadway like her personal toy. It always seemed to be about her. Just my opinion.
My vote for best is Angela Lansbury. I have fond memories of watching the Tonys as a teenager in the 80s and Lansbury was my favorite host. She was (and is) class personified!
I thought Sean Hayes was pretty bad as a host. I'll say I'm tired of NPH, but he's never been as bad as Hayes was. Loved Whoopi a few years ago.
Recently, I've loathed Sean Hayes. Neil Patrick Harris is awful, too, though. His opening number about the theater "not being for gays" was homophobic, and last year's travesty made every musical seem like it was a big, campy extravaganza where everyone SINGS AND DANCES AND DOES JAZZ HANDS! WEEE! (Not so, and Mr. Harris has done two shows where the opposite is the case-- ASSASSINS and SWEENEY TODD. He should know better.)
I always loved when Hugh Jackman did the show, and I thought Whoppi was quite amusing, too. I still think Bernadette Peters ought to host sometime. She did very well with Gregory Hines a while back. Was it young and hip? No. But the Tonys ought to stop thinking they're young and hip, and just put on the show that their usual viewers want to see.
