Wow! That was really awesome/fascinating. You can barely hear the synth in there (and yeah, all of that is retained in the OCR with all the additional instruments added), and percussion comes lightly in at the end. Obviously the piano is the only constant which might explain why I've heard differently in the past. (although I didn't do much research before, just read minor things in passing)

The song almost feels robbed of its orchestration there in light of the OCR haha.

No kidding--it sounds like when you go to a recital or a very basic amateur production and they just have a pianist--basically.  I'd be curious to hear ones like How I Saved Roosevelt or even Ballad of Booth which I assume would use the synth keyboard to try to replicate some of the real instruments we are used to.

Does anyone know the story on the FORUM orchestrations?

I played Miles in two regional productions, but, I hate to say, I paid no attention to the orchestra except the pianist/conductor.  But I posted on FaceBook how I recently picked up the 1996 revival CD at a flea market--and was disappointed by two things.  One was that Miles was now a tenor (I think?  Certainly I can't sing along to his songs on the CD unless I use falsetto,) and that the orchestrations were no longer quirky but...  competently normal.

Tunick did the new orchestrations.  One person on my FB said that at the time they said the original orchestrations had been lost.  But others have said that's not true. Sid Ramin and Irwin Kostal's originals were quirky--they cut all the strings except for celli--and Tunick's sound...  Well, not quirky.

Best: anything Danny Troob! His work on Cinderella was superb.

Worst: well not really bad, but Stephen Oremus is always a hit or miss.

^ Agreed, but then again, they were done by Danny Troob who always does beautiful work.
