Best: PATTI LUPONE GYPSY
Worst: SONDHEIM ON SONDHEIM
BEST:
Rent
Taboo
Title of Show
WORST:
Cry Baby
Mamma Mia
The Producers (Bart & Kind)
Interesting, Bracket, I was around a little during the creation of Taboo, while a friend was considering taking it over as the director.
I, also, loved it. You think it might have to do with the lives we led? I think so, for me...
I'm not sure it was about any particular life, I think that struggle for identity is universal -certainly its backdrop would resonate with some more than others, but I don't think it alienated a particular audience as some would suggest. AND it had a beautiful score and Euan Morton was incredible.
Closed too early. I know why it did, but I think if it had held on a little longer, it would have hit its groove.
Best: The Drowsy Chaperone and The Pillowman
Worst: Rent
Well, my friend was asked to take over as director and he refused, thinking there were too many problems...
I thought I loved it because it related to my youth...But, I wondered if regular Americans would relate...I doubt it.
"Too many problems" is a bit of a stretch. It wasn't perfect, but it wasn't a mess.
I'm not sure why I feel the need to defend it - I just think that it didn't get a fair shake early (no thanks to the weasel Riedel) - and it was climbing an uphill battle by the time it opened. I certainly saw potential in it - but the worst part is that it's gone. Royalties aren't available anywhere and nobody else will get a crack at it.
I suppose we're just talking musicals here.
Best: CAROLINE, OR CHANGE
Worst: THOU SHALT NOT & BKLYN
BEST:
Next to Normal
HAIR
La Cage Aux Folles (2010 revival)
Hairspray
Worst:
Rock Of Ages (The musical itself was amazing, but the seatside booze service and drunk patrons were slightly annoying)
Best:
Finian's Rainbow (recent revival)
Ragtime (original and revival)
Sunday in the Park with George (Roundabout revival)
LuPone Gypsy
Sweeney Todd (2005 revival)
Next to Normal
Worst:
Memphis
A Cool Dip in the Barren Saharan Crick (at Playwrights Horizons...I was seeing it for a class unfortunately, but if I hadn't I would have walked out at intermission without a question...only thing I've ever seen that was excruciating to sit through...I nearly cried with relief after it was over)
Best
Patti Lupone Gypsy
Worst
Lestat, even though I loved every second of it, it was not a good show.
quizking101, if 'Rock of Ages' is "amazing", as you say, then how could it possibly be the worst show you EVER saw? Because there were a few drunk patrons that you found "slightly annoying"? That doesn't make any sense to me. You thought that the show was amazing, but you found one aspect slightly annoying and it's the worst thing you ever saw? Huh? How much theatre have you actually seen? I'm not being mean, I'm honestly curious.

Best: Avenue Q
Worst: White Christmas (2008 production)
I also love TABOO for very personal reasons. Although it's not the best thing I've ever seen, it may be my favorite. I saw it nearly 14 times.
BEST: Passing Strange or Grey Gardens
WORST: Young Frankenstein
Best: Ragtime
Worst: Bye Bye Birdie Revival

Best: N2N
Worst: Golda's Balcony (Sp)
It's fascinating to see some favorite shows are others' worst. Millions loved Michael Jackson, millions hated him. Millions love Eminem, millions hate him. Talent: undefinable. It's part of why American Idol is so disgusting to so many working performers and teachers....
Millions watched William Hung on Americal Idol and on Youtube. I guess he must be really talented, right? Or what is it that defines talent? No one can define it...
I'm torn. I think Sunday is the most beautiful, perfect show on the page, but that doesn't mean every production of it is good, so I guess it doesn't technically qualify for this. So if it has to be a show I've seen, Ragtime at the Kennedy Center.
Worst: Tarzan. No confusion there.
Best: Ragtime Revival.
Worst: Hrm. Well. I haven't seen any professional shows that I actually didn't enjoy. I did see a touring production of The Lion King in which Scar's microphone was off for the entire show and my view was obstructed the whole time by a giant pointless bar in front of my face, but The Lion King is probably in my top three favorite movies, so it was worth it just to be seeing The Lion King. Most people would want me to say The Little Mermaid, but I LOVED EVERY SECOND of it.
So the worst show I've ever seen was a high school production of Alice in Wonderland in which Lewis Carroll is the narrator and rapes Alice at the end.
"Too many problems" is a bit of a stretch. It wasn't perfect, but it wasn't a mess.
You'll have to take it up with probably the MOST powerful theater director in the country... (I'm name-dropping, you know, because I'm delusional about my teeny-eeny-weeny acting school with the imaginary Tony winners...)
But, as I said, I enjoyed it...but, it's probably because of my young, celeb-driven, party life in LA at 18...
Best: Spring Awakening, Company (Revival), Avenue Q, Next to Normal, Billy Elliot
Worst: Haven't seen too many shows I hated. Starlight Express on tour and Cats at the Muny
Best: Sweeney Todd (original 1979 production)
Worst: Sweeney Todd (2005 production)
You didn't really name drop, since I see no name in your post. But of the three directors I would consider to be "the MOST powerful", they have each recently worked on shows that are actual disasters...
