Best opening notes

Without a doubt, GYPSY. That is one show I would argue to the death about concerning any aspect of that show. Its, in my opinion, the greatest musical in the history of musical theater. The opening notes of the overture present that ideal brillantly! As someone said "da-dun-dun-duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuun." Its perfect. You can go up to someone who doesn't even know musical theater that well, play those notes and they'll say "of course, gypsy". Its that simple. The end! :)

I always thought that Once on This Island had a great opening bit... It takes you in the story telling and holds you there.
But recently, I have thought that Dirty Rotten has a great opening. I find myself humming it at the counter and work.
Also~ Candide has one of the best openings

Gypsy, Les Miz, Sweeney Todd, A Little Night Music.
Though in my opinion, the Wicked opening is the best part of the show. I don't like the show very much, but the opening IS pretty thrilling.

Nothing can beat Les Mis for me. When I saw the show last Novemeber for the first time, I already knew the music by heart, but I nearly had a spaz attack from shear excitement when the conductor swung his arms for the first time and I heard the opening notes.
I love Phantom too. Never seen the show, but I get chills all over when the chandelier flies up and you hear DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN!!! in the movie.
Wicked is another one.
