Which opening notes of a musical best let you know what you're about to see? My daughter likes Hairspray's first few notes because they tell you how much fun the show is going to be. I'm stuck in old world - West Side Story and Fiddler.

I love Les Mis' opening notes and think that they pretty much reflect the rest of the show!
Yup, Les Miserables will always be my favorite opening.

I thought GYPSY's opening notes were considered musical theatre's most memorable.

Wicked's beginning notes are thrilling and with the dragon and monkeys and whatnot, the affect is even more enthralling and exciting.
I love Wicked's beginning..it is very thrilling! and DRS makes you wanna dance!
Les Mis, POTO, Gypsy, and Sweeney Todd (after the factory whistle) the fast paced music and the eery arrangements- it lets you know what kind of night you're in for.

If you mean best opening notes of the overture- well, Gypsy simply has the best overture, so I'd go with that. If you mean opening notes of the first song, I always liked the beginning of Oklahoma!
I forgot Carousel! Shame on me...

Les Mis...unfortunately, the OLC opens terribly - like the OFC...the difference, OFC opens without a Prologue.
GYPSY, of course.
And CABARET...(drumrollllllllllllllll...CRASH!)
