Las Vegas audiences are in for a treat when Emmy, Grammy and Tony Award winner Bette Midler begins her two-year engagement at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace Feb. 20. Midler — who has titled her new concert act The Showgirl Must Go On — will be backed by a 13-piece band and 20 female dancers in an evening that will feature an eclectic mix of tunes and characters (expect the wheelchair-bound mermaid Delores Delago and old, old Soph). A few years ago, I had the opportunity to catch Midler's wonderful Kiss My Brass tour, and onstage the award-winning actress was a thrilling mix of singer, comedienne and social commentator. I was also utterly impressed by Midler's musicianship as she made her way through such signature tunes as "From a Distance," "Wind Beneath My Wings," "I Think It's Gonna Rain Today," "Shiver Me Timbers" and "The Rose" as well as standards like "Skylark" and "Tenderly." A few weeks ago I had the true privilege of chatting by phone with Midler, who spoke about her newest Las Vegas endeavor, her work for the New York Restoration Project (which she founded) and her thoughts about returning to Broadway. And, be sure to catch the supremely talented Midler in Las Vegas, and you'll understand why she is, to fans and critics alike, simply divine.

Let's face it. Midler will never return to Broadway as an actress. She may one day book one of her shows into a Broadway theater, but she will never return in a Broadway show.
Thanks for the link to the article, but in typical Andrew Gans form -- he asked questions many on here already knew the answers to for quite some time. Nothing new was revealed.
Her confirmation that she is retiring after her 2 year Las Vegas run pretty much answers everything.

Maybe she will put her $$$ into a Braodway show? I have learned, one can do anything they put their minds to if they have their health, family, friends, backers and money! (:
one can do a show and only to 5 shows a week if they want to,right? is there a law that says one must do 8 show a week? I also think as we get older, one wants to leave the world a better place than we arrived. The Divine Miss M is passionate about her environment! She also has a wonderful daughter and husband to spend time with. I do not think any of us knows what she will do, and I really doubt she does either? Look at Cher and her "retirement" and her last tour? And now she is back. Life pitches us curve balls, strikes, and occasionally a homerun. It is up to us to look for those opportunites and run with it if we are able! I wish Midler a fantastic 2 years in Vegas and I will be there at some point (if life brings me some cash)! Break A Leg Bette and Harlettes! Here's to age 62 and still goin strong!
Cher (as did Tina Turner) never said they would be officially 'retiring'. They just said they would be retiring from touring. The Las Vegas gig for Cher doesn't fall into the 'retiring from touring' scenario as she will be in one sole place the entire run of her gig.
Cher's Final Tour was indeed that -- a FINAL tour, no matter how many years it toured the country.
'Kiss My Brass' was indeed a successful tour but each city never totally sold out. She has been reluctant to spend a lot of money on the new Vegas show and was advised to take a look at the amazingly technical productions that Celine Dion and Elton John had presented at the Caesars Palace Amphitheatre in the last 5 years. Her team advised that they would be hard acts to follow but she refused to spend money. it will be interesting to see what she eventually puts on stage this month. I have plans to see the show in March, tickets are easy to get hold of at the moment.
I was 18 when i saw her controversial first London dates, the best shows ive seen of heres was the Radio City engagement in the mid 90s/

What are you talking about?
Are she and Cher ever going to be one shift after the other?
Would love to see Bette and Cher in the same week.
Where is this 'confirmation'???
BETTE MIDLER TO RETIRE AFTER LAS VEGAS RESIDENCY: http://www.contactmusic.com/news.nsf/article/midler%20to%20retire%20after%20las%20vegas%20residency_1056799
I imagine she means retiring from big spectacular stage shows, touring etc. She wont stop making movies at her age.
Time will tell. The Vegas show itself isnt being labeled 'a farewell' of any kind.

Again I say, Kudos to Cher, Elton and Bette for "doing their thing" and their enthusiasm to entertain all generations! let's see? do i want a ticket to see one of them? or do i go see Brittany Spears or Lindsay Lohan or Winehouse? HHMMMMM???
I say "keep on keepin on" until your time comes or no one at all comes to see you anymore! Look at Carol Channing touring with Hello Dolly at 80! Look at George Burns, he was cracking jokes and performing into his 90's! I say... Goodnight Gracie!
Will she come out of retirement to play Morrible in the "Wicked" movie?
Gotta love Bette!

"Gotta love Bette!"
I like to make my own decisions, thanks.
Wouldn't that be cool if we could get Cher, Bette and Barbara to do FIRST WIVES CLUB the musical!
"Gotta love Bette!"
I like to make my own decisions, thanks.
Why would you revive this thread just to say that?
Who is Barbara? Barbara Eden? Barbara Carrera? Barbara Feldon? Barbara Mandrell?
If you meant Streisand... her name is BARBRA not Barbara.
Oy!
