The troll that started this thread doesn't seem to want to discuss it.
She's wrong, and that all they will discuss.
Case closed.

I agree that the Divine Miss M might be too old as "Mame." That's almost like imagining a 71 year old actress portraying "Mama Rose" in a film..........uh oh. from RC in Austin, Texas

Posted: 5/11/13 at 7:59pmBette would certainly make a far better Mame or Dolly than she did Rose. That "performance" was embarrassing. However, I can really see her being a delightful Mame. If it was on stage, I don't think age is much of an issue. She still looks great and could pass for at least 50. I always thought Roz looked ancient in the original film, but people aged differently back then.

First of all, these old bags who get plastic surgery do NOT look young, they look strange.
Second of all it doesn't even really have to do with looks. A 70 year old woman simply does not carry herself the same way a 40 year old woman does, and no amount of good acting can overcome that. It's just pathetic at some point, in my never to be humble opinion!

Posted: 5/11/13 at 9:28pmWith Bette playing Mame they'd have to re-work the scene with the ant-Semitic Upsons.

Posted: 5/11/13 at 9:32pmBette Midler of course already has played MAME. At least in a reading that happened in the early 1990s. It was with the outlook of doing it as a television production and a follow-up to Gypsy. Midler came away from that reading essentially feeling just that she wasn't right for the role, and specifically stated to friends the subplot with the Upsons as being one consideration.

Posted: 5/11/13 at 9:35pmLOL early '90s would be fine. Today? Not so much.

Posted: 5/11/13 at 9:48pmUgh the idea of gutter born Cher as the high born Mame Dennis is absurd on it's face.

Posted: 5/11/13 at 9:48pmThe Cher thing was a different production.

Yes but Meryl Streep was almost 60 when she played Donna in Mamma Mia, who I envision being early 40ish. The public will now accept actresses playing younger, even those who arent crazy with plastic surgery.
Bette and Meryl must take very good care of themselves and have access to great makeup and lighting, etc. To me, Bette looks the same as she always has. So does Meryl.
I think people would buy Bette as Mame.

Posted: 5/11/13 at 10:48pmStreep in that horrible show isn't even in the same ballpark as the idea of a 70 year old Bette Midler playing Mame. It's mental!
