Isn't theatre supposed to be a fantasy? I hate when people take this things so literal. Part of the magic is in the make-believe, you can be whoever you want to be. An audience knows that actors are not in real life the characters they portray on stage.

She's incredibly charismatic, quirky, has the star power needed to headline a revival of Mame, and would actually be a knockout in the park. What's there to dislike?

I was so excited to see Cher play Mame when I first heard about the projected TV movie back in the day, it's sad it never happened.
MichaelBennett, I think the idea of Gwyneth as Mame is brilliant, bring on Tilda Swinton (who rarely gets to play funny) or Charlize Theron as her Vera and you got yourself an A-list film version. I do think the idea of a Paltrow-headlined MAME revival could be an event, by all accounts, she has been great in her West End work.

Catherine Zeta Jones was in talks a few years back for the Menier when they were interested in reviving the show, but Jerry Herman is holding out for a larger scale production to materialise.
My thoughts on Bette was perhaps 10 years too late, but she looks good for 70...
Goldie Hawn again 10 or 20 years ago would have been amazing

You people are high. Bette is PAST the time she can play Mame. She knows it, too. That's why she turned it down.
Let someone who is 40-50 have a chance. Let Jan Maxwell do it. SHE'D be SIMPLY wonderful!!

You don't get that she's too old for the role? It's very simple: She's 70...she's too old for the role. It's more a reality than a criticism.

MAME certainly works for me, but I'm not sure how to cast it if the goal is a 50-year-old whose name alone will sell out a Broadway house eight times a week.
I loved Jan Maxwell in FOLLIES, but I don't believe she's a big "money" name and she's already closer to 60 than 50.
To me, Gwyneth Paltrow lacks the charisma.
I guess we'll just have to wait for Anne Hathaway...

First of all, Bette doesn't look her age. Second of all, you're all high if you think Mame can't be older than 50.
I know plenty of ladies who are aunts of 10 to 13-year-old boys right now. And that's only in Act I. In Act II, Patrick is out of college, so Mame could easily be in her 60s (even mid to late 60s).
So shut the hell up. *winky face*
It's a role like Dolly Levi. You can be 30 or 300, as long as you can play the part.
But that's the key, isn't it? Without the right actress playing the part, you have nothing.
I think Bette would be great as Mame ... right now. Today. Not 10 years ago, or 10 months ago.
