jhud went through a BFA program for musical theater, did she not? i certainly hope she can act.
I AGREE! Anika is so underrated and underappreciated in this film. She stole every frame she was in!

I truly hope Hudson wins that Supporting Actress Oscar. This movie completely belongs to her. She is fierce as Effie.
Anika Noni Rose is outstanding, as well. The audience I was around absolutely adored her. Here's hoping this film brings her great success in her future endeavors.
Beyonce was wonderful. She sings beautifully, and she is one of my favorite pop vocalists out there today. But this woman will most likely not be nominated for an Oscar. I look for Hudson and Eddie Murphy, who is in fine form, to score acting nods.
Since the Oprah interview, when Beyonce said that she had to tame down because of the role, her fans are going crazy defending her. Most of her fans (who have not seen the movie, I believe)are saying that the reason why JHud stole the movie because she had to tame down.
Crazy.
As for the Oscars, I believe that Eddie and JHud will get one. Congratulations, in advance to them.
GOD BLESS!

Beyonce made for an excellent Deena. But anyone who knows anything about DREAMGIRLS knows that it's Effie's show. And the Best Actress category, unlike last year, is quite crowded. Several deserving performances are destined to be left out in the cold. Unless there's a huge push for Beyonce in the leading category, don't count on that Oscar nod.
Beyonce isn't going to win, of course. But I have a hunch Helen Mirren isn't going to win either. You have to go all the way back to Jessica Tandy in 1989 to find a winner over 50 years old. The Oscar likes em young. Watch it be somebody like Naomi Watts for that Cholera Movie.
I think Helen Mirren will win, hands down. There's just no fierce competition so far.
So far is always "famous last words" at the Oscars though. And I still think Helen Mirren could (and probably will) win every precursor and still have the Oscar yanked away from her at the last minute. Look at the list of women who have won in particularly the last ten years. They aren't at all in the vein of what Mirren is doing in THE QUEEN. In order for her to be guaranteed the Oscar, Helen Mirren would have had to have had a big emotional breakdown scene where she cried and ranted and raved and confessed what a terrible person she was.
It's sad, because she probably deserves the award. The Oscars are just not that into subtle performances by upper middle aged women.
She does wear a lot of disguising makeup though - she does have that in her favor. The Oscars love that.
Well, statistics are on your side, but the Academy has been defying statistics A LOT these past few years. And wouldn't they be due for awarding another actress over 50 statistically?
I think Mirren will win.
Well there are sure to be three nominees over 50 this year: Mirren, Meryl Streep and Judi Dench. They could just as easily decide its time to give Streep a third Oscar (she does deserve another after her record nominations) and never underestimate the power of Judi Dench.
Or they could all cancel each other out...
I still think anything could happen, and Mirren will have to win essentially every precursor to win the Oscar.
Mirren WILL win every precursor award, but I would bet on the New York Critics (whatever it's called) picking someone truly bizzare like Keke Palmer for AKEELAH AND THE BEE.
Well anything can happen. I won't claim to know who is going to win THIS award.
Anything but that, Jerby.
that or Penelope Cruz in VOLVER. I could see the LA Critics going for that. Mirren will probably win the NBR.
The Actress/Comedy category at the globes will be interesting.
Surely Annette Benning and Meryl Streep will be nominated. Maybe even Beyonce Knowles. I'm sure Cruz will be in there, and hopefully someone like Abigail Breslin. What do you think?
You know--it could turn out to be an interesting race. It could be that Mirren has the same buzz as Spacek did. She won most every precursor, but lost to the "Oscar scene" filled performance by Berry.
I think the difference here is that it feels more like the same energy that was around when the Academy finally annointed Judi Dench.
Exactly. A second role of this magnitude may never come again for Mirren. She's been brilliant forever, so might as well recognize her while it's convenient.
Hmm...I'm not sure the comparison to Dench is completely on target. I think the Academy has a very different set of rules for supporting actress and remember that Dench's win for SHAKESPEARE was at least partly (as all Oscar wins seem to be) an also ran award for her work the year before in MRS. BROWN (which everyone said she deserved to win for).
Helen Mirren may not quite have that kind of momentum, though she did win the Emmy for playing Elizabeth I this year and the old people in the Academy probably watch her on tv all the time in Prime Suspect.
The race will probably be more interesting than we all imagine right now. RUNNING WITH SCISSORS is dead, dead, dead. If Bening gets a globe nom for that it will be a pure popularity vote for a relatively weak catagory. Knowles could actually win in that catagory (remember Madonna's EVITA statue?)
Abagail Breslin will definitely get an Oscar nom. She might even upset Jennifer Hudson, if DREAMGIRLS doesn't catch fire.

I love how Madonna in Evita beat out Frances McDormand in Fargo for the Golden Globe.
I thought Toni Collette had a bigger chance of getting a nomination than Abigail Breslin. Though certainly all the scenes at the Little Miss Sunshine contest (don't want to give away any spoilers) are worthy of a nod for Breslin.
I do not believe Bening's performance in "Running With Scissors" deserves a nomination, if anyone should get recognition for this mediocre and horrendous film should be Jill Clayburgh.
I didn't see the film, but Clayburgh is featured.
If the Globes will nominate Johnny Depp for CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY and Pierce Brosnan for THE MATADOR, Benning certainly has a chance.
Collette is brilliant, but I don't see any awards coming her way for SUNSHINE. She is supporting, as I would consider Breslin leading.
Oh, I wasn't specifically referring to the Leading Category, munk. I just meant that in any category, Clayburgh is the only one I thought deserved recognition. I'm sure Annette Benning has a chance of getting a Golden Globe nod, but I preferred her slot went to someone else. Will she be considered for the Comedy category or Drama?
From Michael Bennett's post, I gathered that Abigail Breslin would be considered for the supporting role category. I didn't think anyone in Little Miss Sunshine had a leading role, per se, it is such an ensemble-driven piece.
Breslin is definitely being pushed for supporting which is smart because little girls have a great track record for winning in that catagory, and who wouldn't vote for that sweet pudgy little girl with the huge glasses, even bigger dimples and that charming crooked smile?
Focus usually wages a very smart campagin. I bet SUNSHINE will do really well come award nominations.
