"In the current issue of Variety, DreamWorks has positioned Beyoncé Knowles, who portrays Deena Jones in the film, in the Best Actress category, while Jennifer Hudson (Effie White) and Anika Noni Rose (Lorrell Robinson) are both jockeying for Best Supporting Actress nominations. Jamie Foxx, the film's Curtis Taylor Jr., is suggested for Best Actor, while Eddie Murphy and Danny Glover, who play, respectively, James "Thunder" Early and Marty, are named for Best Supporting Actor."

Off-Topic.
Oh God, this On-Topic Off-Topic bull**** is really irrelevant.
it makes sense, when you take into account the Helen Mirren will most likely win best leading for "the Queen"
it's all just politics in the end. they want to set Hudson up for a win, and know that there is no chance for a lead actress win, so why not go the supporting route?
Am I mistaken, or isn't it up to the nominators to decide which actress is better suited for Leading. If this is the case, Jennifer may have a strong shot once the movie comes out. Everyone knows Effie steals the show.
beyonce will not be nominated but eddie murphy will be. jhud has a good chance of a nod and an actual win if she is lucky.
mirren, dench, blanchett, streep, winslet -- there is so much high-stakes work in the lead category this year, annette benning will go begging.
Beyondme will not win.
Jennifer will.
BrdwyThtr: I believe that for the Golden Globes, the HFP determines who should be in what category. For the Oscars, I think it's up to the producers to categorize everyone, hence for "For Your Consideration" ads.
I know there are plenty of instances - and I'm too lazy to research them - of people in the precursor awards being in categories different from their eventual Oscar categories.
Catherine Zeta-Jones lost to Renee Zellweger in the Leading category at the Golden Globes, then went on to win the Oscar in the Supporting category while Zellweger lost in the Leading category. So yes, there have been instances.
I just find it funny that the producers are tooting Beyonce's horn just because she's a "star". Deena isn't the role that comes to mind first when you think of Dreamgirls, in my opinion.
Beyotch hasn't even been nominated yet. All this 'talk' is about POSSIBLE nominations.
We can discuss this once the actual nominations come out.
Beyotch will get a Golden Globe nomination, but with the Oscars -- a big fat no.

I'm so excited for this movie. Everytime I see a clip, it just fuels my excitement. I'm going to get the Dreamgirls concert cast because I love the cast that they have - basically, I have a man crush on Norm Lewis.
I saw their intereviews on Oprah and Beyonce just came across as cold and pissed the whole time. Maybe it's because Jennifer Hudson got so many freakin applause? I dunno.

I don't understand why this keeps taking people by surprise, nor do I understand why people keep thinking that the Oscar race is ever "fair."
This seems like a much bigger deal to people on message boards and in the trades than it would the women involved. If I were Jennifer Hudson, I'd thank my lucky stars that all the talk for me was supporting. She stands a good chance of actually winning that way.
Hudson in Supporting is fine with me......She'll have a MUCH better chance for success.
Also, Eddie Murphy has a big shot in the Supporting Category too!

If Jennifer wins the Oscar, someone better put Jennifer Holliday on suicide watch because she's really gone psycho
That's pretty harsh and unnecessary paris, especially considering Ms.Holliday's past
I would love for both Beyonce & Jennifer Hudson to win an Oscar. Even thought I highly doubt it's gonna happen. Both women are incredible.
The film WILL be nominated for Best Picture and Best Director.
Also, I have no doubt in my mind that Eddie Murphy and Jennifer Hudson will both also be nominated.
And I strongly believe Jennifer will win... she's the only cast member who will win... thats how the academy will reward the film. Because as much as I loved the movie, I still think THE DEPARTED was better, and Marty will win the directing Oscar. And DEPARTED will probably take Best Picture as well.
As for Beyonce... please... have you actually SEEN the movie? Shes lucky enough to score a Globe nomination alone (if that even happens)... this is Jennifers movie. Beyonce has no shot in hell with Oscar.
I would think that Eddie has a great shot at winning as well... but Nicholson is in the race and you know how much the AMPAS love him. Plus he was awesome in the movie.
Tatum O'Neal was nommed for the lead GG for Paper Moon, winning, and leaving the supporting open for Linda Blair to win.
They were both nommed for supporting oscar and Tatum won.
**edit: Tatum lost the GG to Glenda Jackson, for A Touch of Class, who later won the lead actress oscar.
Most everyone who has already posted has hit the nail on the head. Beyonce will get a Golden Globe nod b/c she is an international star. She will not get anywhere near an Oscar nod.
The girl has terrible affect and is not a great actress. She has the Madonna factor. If she is singing and emoting, as in a music video, she is fierce and a force of nature. The child opens her mouth to talk and it is all over.
Betty thats actually the best way I can put it:
when she "acts" through the medium of a music video... or during the musical sequences of DREAMGIRLS... she is GREAT!
But when she opens her mouth for a sentance of dialogue, she stinks up the screen. I was just surprised at how good of an actress Hudson was. Because I had expected her to be just as bad... i was very surprised.
And its a shame Anika is getting little to no buzz for her performance. She was wonderful.
