I asked my friend who is working on the film and he says Beyonce will have a shared credit with Henry Krieger and a lyricist on exactly ONE song. All other songs were written by and will be credited to Henry Krieger and a few different lyricists (Tom Eyen, who wrote the lyrics for all the songs in the show, died in 1991.)
Krieger, as previously reported, has written four new songs for the film - none of which is for the credits.

Whoa. Major needless hate and fandom wanking here.
I am going to at least give Beyonce and Bill Condon a chance before I judge. We don't even know in what context the songs are going to be used for goodness sake. They could be for anything.
Plus as mentioned Beyonce has major songwriting talent, I am sure anything she writes would fit the theme of the movie. Heck it cannot be worse then that Anatasia number in "Chicago".

NOOOO!!! AHHH!! I had hope for this movie!!!!
I'm just waiting to see how they work Jay-Z's rap break into it.
And, um. Yeah.
Lucy Liu. With my girl Drew. Cameron D and Destiny. Charlies' Angels. C'mon...
She's certainly well-produced and can write a catchy hook, but we ain't talking songwriting genius here.
But if it brings people into the movie, I guess we'll have to deal with it. I saw the teaser trailer this weekend and it was pretty exciting. Even though Jennifer and Anika weren't within 10 miles of being mentioned...

Why would Anika be mentioned in a teaser trailer that's out a year in advance? So people can scratch their heads and go "Who?"

Wow.
That just pissed me off.
Maybe after she writes new songs for "Dreamgirls" Beyonce can help Elton write some new stuff so "Lestat" will run (Calm Down, Just Kidding!)

and then maybe she can write some new songs for the "Hairspray" film and for the next revivals of "Hello Dolly!" and "Gypsy".
yes she does write the music too. she had to come up with the melody to write a song. people who arent familiar with her work should stop with the haterade. i mean what songs do you people know that she sings? ive heard mention of her poppiest songs: bootylicious, independent women, and check on it. come on people lets dig deeper. and i think its horrible when u assume she's not a good songwriter because she's an r+b singer. dreamgirls has an r+b score. any of those songs could be put out as r+b singles people. im not saying that she is a musical genius, but the woman is overwhelmingly talented as a songwriter and it saddens me that people who love musicals try to deny that because musicals are the only things in the whole world that incorporates all music. and just because she has this stigma of "beyonce" doesnt mean that her song will be trash. i havent heard a song she's written yet thats trash.

perfect example of ignorance. She sure is well produced. she produces her own music. i guess that was another assumption that she's just a pretty face with a huge team manipulating the strings. typical

I don't care who is writing the songs and I'm perfectly happy to see Beyoncé in the role. In a perfect world, Vanessa Williams would have played Deena Jones ten years ago, but it's not a perfect world and I want Miss Knowles to succeed in the role as much as anyone. I just keep thinking that four songs added means at least that many songs cut.
TonyaFantastic, please spend less time putting words in other people's mouths and use the extra time to actually read what they are saying. I haven't seen anybody do quite a few of the things you accuse them of doing. In fact, most people acknowledged Beyonce's abilities as a songwriter. We are questioning how appropriate her talents will be for a song in a Broadway musical. As I doubt you know Beyonce personally, your belief that she is a creative genius and maverick is just as valid as somebody else's belief that she (almost undoubtedly) has dozens of people working with her to help her perfect her music, like any other pop star with lots and lots of money.
I like Beyonce, although I am not desperately in love with her music. I'm not going to make any assumptions about this movie until I see it. I don't really think the original score is genius either, although I like it. I'm not going to commit suicide if they tinker with it. After all, the show is missing two of its original greatest elements. Jennifer Holliday and Michael Bennett.

Eh... my apprehension comes from the idea of Beyonce doing anymore than ACTING and SINGING in this movie. Why can't they just do it right. They need to get Chris Columbus to direct this. Say what you want about Rent, but it was a good movie that wasn't bogged down by alot of extra. Bill Condon is trying to make this a vanity piece for Beyonce, himself, and that other lyricist guy. That's why I kinda wish Beyonce nor Jamie Foxx were nowhere near this movie (like I said in my Unpopular Opinions thread). Whenever you get big stars to "sell" a movie, it turns into a long ego-stroking session for whoever is involved. And since Beyonce already gets more recognition than I think she deserves, or rather than she deserves, this is going to turn into some little pet thing.
Chris Columbus is an uninspired director and they need someone with some kind of vision.
The pet thing irritates me too, though. As if this little cultural pocket is something they can just dig their hands into for fun to get off.

That is the funniest thing I've read all night! Thanks!

That's a lot of vanity. Hi, "other lyricist guy!"

Did I read that right? Because you think she doesn't deserve it, she really doesn't deserve it?
i didnt put words in anyone's mouth. when i look at the majority of the posts on this board about beyonce they say one thing: she's a pop star, she's overrated, all the normal haterisms. i just hate it when people assume things about a product theyve never seen and this board is wonderful at doing that.
*Faints*
Yes Yes Yes Beyonce is going to get that Oscar one way or another!
Thank you TonyaFanatic for you graciously wisdom of Beyonce. She was the FIRST African-American FEMALE to EVER win ASCAP songwriter of the year. Girl, got the lyrics in her...but for the sake of the bubble gum pop world ...she writes simple. But she has some deeps songs on her resume:
1. Free
2. Through with Love
3. Survivor
4. If
5. I can't take no more
6. Dangerously in Love
7. Independent Woman
Girl got the skills and the knowledge just as well as any male writer. BRAVO to Beyonce I am so proud of her!

7.) Janet Jackson – 21 Grammy nominations, 5 wins
And Beyonce is doing all this and she is ONLY 24 years old. Smart cookie.

My doubt in Beyonce comes not from the disbelief in her songwriting talents, because she is a great writer. My doubt comes from this style of writing. Not Broadway, because the music is not Broadway in style, and it's not a Broadway show, it's a movie. My doubt comes from the fact that she's never written in this medium before: opera. Say what you will, but Dreamgirls is essentially an opera. A R&B/Gospel/Motown opera, and it's one thing to write a song about love, but it's quite another to write worthwhile dialogue music. It doesn't say what she's writing, for what moments in the show, but my doubt comes from the fact that she's never written a musical before. Hopefully she'll surprise me.
Who's written the lyrics for the new songs that Krieger wrote?

I think Miss Knowles knows she won't be getting an Oscar for Best Actress and the one song with her name on the credits will at least ensure her a nod for Best Original Song. She may not win that one either. Kudos to her for doing everything in her power to try and win that Oscar.
I wouldn't count her out for an Oscar. The role is pretty perfect for her, and with a good director I'm sure her acting chops will improve.
Its not a matter of has she ever written for a broadway play...which is an art. The fact you're missing is that writing lyrics is her art...now she can add this to her resume. Let the girl grow.
Dreamgirls the movie is not gonna to be Broadway...it gonna to be the adaptation of what Broadway could never do for Dreamgirls by giving us illusions which will continue the Dreamgirls lasting social significance.

The girl can barely mask her fake smile. To think that Hollywood would give her an Oscar over actual acting thespians is a joke. I think she will do well in the part but Oscar-worthy? No. Her acting may improve but she is no Angela Bassett.
I will come back here after the Oscar win in 2007...and I am calling the braggin' rights, right now. It gonna read as such: "I told you so..." Beyonce will be getting an Oscar nomination and an Oscar win.

Oh please. ASCAP Award aside, the Grammys are a joke. Britney Spears and Paula Abdul have won Grammys; what does that tell you? Beyonce can write songs with other people so I don't know. If this were Lauryn Hill or something talking about being an excellent writer I'd be in full agreement. But considering ol' girls resume consists of fluffy pop songs with catchy hooks... I don't know. Broadway isn't fickle like the pop music scene is. Again, like I said, Beyonce gets waaaay too much credit.

"the Grammys are a joke. Britney Spears and Paula Abdul have won Grammys; what does that tell you?"
Just so you know the grammy that Britney Spears and Paula Abdul won were not for vocal performance or song writing.
Britney won for "best dance recording" for "Toxic", and Paula won for "Best Music Video, Short Form" for "Opposites Attract".
I think both grammys were deserved as "Toxic" was a great dance song and by Paula being known for being a great coreographer she deserved a grammy for her video.
The only way their grammy's sould be considered a joke to some would be if they won for a vocal performance (many people think neither paula or britney can sing). Many people don't understand the grammy categories and simply think they have no merit because a person who's talent they don't respect has won, however, if you look at the categories they've won in you'd probably understand the win.

Am i the only one that sees what a horrible Idea this is (atleast from an integrity and honesty to the original show point of view)?
sure its a bit of marketing genius, but this movie just keeps getting worse and worse.
