Well, he is very popular here on the board! If you see him on stage you'll understand why, he is magnificent live ! He originated the role of Link on Hairspray and is now appearing on Light in the Piazza for a role that earned him a TONY award nomination. Any chance you have check him out, he is going to be a huge star very soon, since he has all the ingredients. He is a wonderful singer, great actor, unbelievable dancer and is very easy on the eyes, too ! The stage door

#236James and George by the Stage Door
Posted: 8/11/05 at 6:28pm

I've promised not to reveal the names of the girls. The boys you already know. This could be you! James and George by the Stage Door

It is taken by the stage door outside the theatre. If you go to the Stage Door pub you might run into other actors and crew members.

"A more alarming thought is that while this show forges a visceral connection with its audience in a way American musicals were once famous for, "Billy Elliot" may simply be too full of real feeling for the synthetic Broadway of today." - Ben Brantley, New York Times.

Like you, WestEndFan 2, I was also at the Victoria Palace Theatre last night and what a result! I completly agree with what you've said about the understudy for Mrs Wilkinson and what a star George is to step in like that especially having done the matinee performance earlier on in the day!

I hope you're feeling better today Liam.

One question I wanted to ask (if anyone is actually in the show), can you see us all sitting in the audience while you are performing with those huge spot lights shining on you? Does this get reversed when the miners scene (near the end of the second half) has the guys helmet lights shining onto us?

You lucky thing, two Billys. I hope Liam is feeling better. I would like to see Gillian playing the part as you have as she has such a wonderful voice and presence.

All great things must come to pass. We know the first will soon be last and in the ground we may be lain , but a seed is sown to rise again.

I think actors can still see the audiences from the stage, esp the first 2 rows I think... that's what I heard!

Yes the actors can see the first 2 rows of the audience. They can also see if anybody is doing a video! This is off putting as they can only see a red light flashing. So watch out if you are trying to sneak video!

Again I totally agree with you WestEndFan 2, there are so many other people behind the scenes which play a huge part in making the whole of the production run smoothly. Well done.

I still can't get over Gillian Kirkpatrick who understudied the role of Mrs Wilkinson yesterday. Whoever casted her, all credit to them, she certainly gets my vote.

Small world that we were both in the theatre on the same night, I was in the Dress Circle.

Everyone that posts messages on this board, we should all try and fix a date so that we can all go to see this show on the same day!

wow, that means George did two(well, one and a half) shows in one day!
I went to Billy Elliot yesterday's matinee, expected to see Liam but eventually saw George. I was a little bit disappointed at the beginning, but after seeing how brilliant George was, I am very glad that I saw George instead. I've seen all three Billys now!!I enjoyed George's performance vey much. His singing is probably the best out of three Billys, and he looks very confident on stage. Also, Ryan had become my favorite Michael!

I saw Gillian Kirkpatrick as Mrs. Wilkinson, too. I think she made a brilliant Mrs. Wilkinson. I love her singing very much.

I am also very glad to know that Liam was fine. However, it seems there was something wrong with the microphones in yesterday's matinee. I remembered the second time I went to Billy Elliot, the screen thing at the very beginning didn't work and the dining chair and table were not in position when Tony grabbed Grandma and asked her to sit down. You can see the shock on actors' faces when they found that there was no chair. However the actors responded very quickly and filled the empty.( although Ann Emery, who played grandma, laughed crazily.) That was really interesting adn funny.

I agree with WestEndfan2. I would like to show my appreciation to those who are behind the scenes. A show could never work without them.

#249Two Billies and one Gillian
Posted: 8/12/05 at 6:04pm

Wasn't it great to see how the transition between Liam and George went so smoothly? It was the very first time something like that had to be done. (Michael has had to be swapped before, though.) Those of us who were at the theatre and saw how the boys and the others handled it, could count ourselves lucky. It's certainly not easy to swap a major character and keep the magic.

Two Billies and one Gillian in the same show, that's not bad, is it?

I saw James Last night and his performance was fantastic as always. However he is living on borrowed time I fear as his voice cracked badly in one song. His dance with the older Billy was very good and his best yet. He did not do his famous back flip at the ballet school sequence though. I wonder if this has been ruled out on health and safety grounds. I shall miss James and Ashley as their Billy/Michael pairing is the best of the three.
Gillian Kirkpatrick again understudied for Haydn Gwynne as Mrs Wilkinson. Ok but lacked the world weariness fed up feel that is needed for the role I felt.
Sorry to read about Liam's illness the other night as he is sensational!! George is also very good as he brings the anger to the part that Jamie Bell captured so well in the film. He also has a wicked sense of humour. I hope he stays after Septmber as well. I have seen the musical 9 times now so I guess I can be classed as an 'addict'!.
