Thank you for the download it was great, i am so proud of James and all the Billys. Please, does anyone have a link for the download of the Royal Variety Performance as I never saw it and would love to see it. thanks
If you watch the film - around 14min 20sec or so into the film after Billy and Debbie walk past the row of police - Debbie stops in front of two posters on a brick wall one of which says 'your ever-faithful washday slave'. Billy crosses the road leaving Debbie standing there. At 14min 26sec a police van drives past Debbie - after it passes her, she has disappeared. Tell me if you notice that too. Billy Elliot has today been crowned Best Musical at a major theatrical awards event.
The tale of the boy from the back streets who danced his way to the Royal Ballet capped a critically and commercially successful first year in the West End by winning favour with Evening Standard Theatre Award judges.
Sir Elton John was at today's star-studded ceremony at the Savoy Hotel in central London to watch his show beat rivals Mary Poppins and The Big Life for the title.
The theatrical bash featured many stars currently appearing in the West End, including Star Trek and X-Men star Patrick Stewart, Shakespeare in Love actor Joseph Fiennes, Bleak House and History Boys star Richard Griffiths, director Stephen Daldry, The X-Files' Gillian Anderson, and Silent Witness star Emilia Fox.
The Home Place by Brian Friel won Best Play, fending off competition from Bloody Sunday by Richard Norton-Taylor, Harvest by Richard Bean and Mike Leigh's Two Thousand Years.
Simon Russell Beale and Harriet Walter were named best actor and actress respectively, Beale for his role as Philip in The Philanthropist and Walter for her performance in Schiller's Mary Stuart.
She told the Evening Standard, before the announcement of her win: "Awards don't alter things in the sense that you can go out on stage and think, 'right, I'm terribly good, I don't have to work any more.'
"But they do make you feel you have been appreciated in some way."
In what has been seen as sign of the resurgence for the West End, commercial theatre scored 18 nominations and six wins at the 51st awards.
In previous years, the National took the lion's share of the nominations, but in 2005 it had just the one for Two Thousand Years.
Evening Standard theatre critic Nicholas de Jongh said: "Commercial theatre has this year staged a comeback in the nominations, which is a sign of the remarkable resurgence of the West End.
"Who would have thought that commercial producers would and could mount two fine productions by a classic German dramatist such as Schiller within the space of less than 12 months?
"I shouldn't think it has happened in theatre history. And that's not all. The diversity of productions in commercial theatres, from Death of a Salesman to the top-notch British musical Billy Elliot, shows further evidence of West End vitality."
The awards, created to recognise talent on the West End stage, named fringe theatre Menier Chocolate Factory as Outstanding Newcomer, with a Special Award presented to the Royal Court for its exceptional contribution to British theatre.
Best Director went to Michael Grandage for Don Carlos, while the Charles Wintour Award for Most Promising Playwright - which includes a £30,000 cheque - went to Nell Leyshon for Comfort Me With Apples.
Thanks for that great news srd17.I have been biting my nails all afternoon!! Congratulations to all the cast and Stephen,Lee,Philip and Elton on a magnificent achievement. To pip Mary Poppins this afternoon was some achievement and you can all feel justly proud. I am going to the show tonight(40th visit)and wonder if there will be mention of the award. I hope so as there could be some atmosphere. Just a reminder to PM me with any late messages to be included on George's card for the 3rd and a thanks to those who have already sent greetings to him. I am sure he will treasure your sentiments as some of you young ladies are sure going to miss him!!
Sorry, i'm sure this has already been asked, but did anyone manage to record james getting his award? or even the Royal variety performance? would be great to watch both of those
I was so annoyed to miss James on sunday, but i was at a rehearsal all day. also, i agree with Bifi, give James the credit he deserves; all the Billy's are amazing in their own way (how do you think they got the part??!!) I love James

Well done Billy! You're one of the best piece of musical theatre I have seen internationally and you deserve this 'Best Musical' Award! Can't wait for the Oliviers!

I am happy as well as sad. I'm happy because billy wins the best musical and mary poppins wins the designer award. I am sad because mary poppins didn't get best musical award.

Mary Poppins is very good too, i LOVE it, it's got the very family feeling in it as well, but there's not as much heart as there is in Billy. And ALOT of audiences who saw the show could relate back to themselves personally, alot of people have family members and friends who've been through the coal mine strike. And to me, Billy is a more REAL show than Mary Poppins and leaves a deeper impression than Mary Poppins. I saw Billy 5 times and I haven't been bored with the jokes and anything yet. But when I saw Mary for the 3rd time, I was already feeling abit bored already... surprisingly not for 'Being Mrs. Banks' (actually I went in ALL for Linzi to sing that song!) but actually 'Jolly Holliday' ! Just my opinion... wow, quite a long post... soz guys!

I've been reading this thread for a while now and finally decided to join the board.
Congratulations to the show for winning best musical in the London Evening Standard Theatre awards today. Most of the front page of today's final edition of the paper is taken up with a colour group photo of James, Tim Healy, Leon, Elton john, George and Liam.
I've seen the show six times now, three times with George and once with Liam, James and Leon. They are all brilliant in their own way as Billy but I do have my favourite. I've even got a ticket for 3rd December, back row of the Dress Circle. Don't know what the view will be like, but can't wait! I envy all you with seats near the front of the stalls. It will be quite a night!
A few people have listed the tracks that will be on the OCR but I'm sure I'm not the only one who has noticed that there appears to be one glaring omission: Billy's dance with his older self to the music of Swan Lake. I know there's no singing but it's a really big part of the show. Surely they can't leave this out.
Thanks to everyone who has uploaded video clips to the site for us all to enjoy. I wouldn't have a clue how to do this!
shudnt the mary popins stuff b in its own bit?its borin 2 us who wan talk bout billy.no offence ment but this is a billy elliot thread. well done to liam an the others 4 winnin the award much deserved

Can anybody tell me who will be performing for OCR?? Some sources said that it will be all 3 billies. I'm not so sure about the tracks played at the theatre. It might not be from the official OCR.

MF is right of course. One thing that does unite us all is a love for this one outstanding piece of theatre called Billy Elliot which was rewarded yesterday - unlike Mary Poppins
