Why would Blackbird producers set a closing date of the day before the Tonys. It seems that the producers would want to leave a little bit of time for a possible Tonys boost.

Tonys*
Because that's when Jeff and Michelle were available?
Also, they're probably not winning any Tonys so I don't see the issue.

Maybe it's because both stars could only contract to that time, and a play this intense might leave them exhausted?
Michelle Williams stated in THR's Nominee Roundtable that doing almost a year in CABARET was "a mistake" and "exhausting", so I can't imagine her wishing to commit to longer runs, especially since she also has her daughter

It just seems strange. The show is getting a lot of press and mentions this week it seems like they may want to keep it open at least a week after the show.

I have to agree. While I loved the show and wish to see both of them get a Tony for it, it probably isn't going to happen. They've been doing the show every night pretty much since February, and they're really exhausted. I stage doored after the show Saturday night and they both came out after only 10 minutes, they were both very nice, but they looked like they were in good need of some sleep. So, yeah, and combined with the fact it hasn't been doing really well in terms of box office, there's no need for it to play any further.

ANewBrainn, it may be hard for you to wrap your head around it, but I think Scott Rudin knows better than you do.

It was announced as a limited run… Was never supposed to go beyond this week. They were both on Charlie Rose a little while ago and both said that it was just physically and emotionally exhausting…Saw it a couple of months ago… Quite something… Great great performances by both… Unsettling topic and no firm answers… Gave you a lot to think about.

These are complex decisions which may seem simple on the face of things. There are financial considerations as well as commitments made by actors, the house in which they are playing, etc. If the limited run end date was previously set, leaving the show open for a few days or a week afterwards is more trouble than it is worth, even if all of the issues could be worked out. Ultimately, it is a money decision.

You could have shared your thoughts in a constructive and less insulting way, like the other posters did.

The show was always scheduled to close June 12.

Michelle Williams seem like a fragile bird with broken wing to me. Like every performance will be her last. Love her.
