Has anyone heard anything about the new show with Michelle Williams and Jeff Bridges, Blackbird?
Im seeing discount tickets already but was wondering if anyone has heard the buzz about this show.

There's a discount code on BroadwayBox.
It was very well reviewed in 2007. Same play, same director, same Jeff Daniels.

It's a stunning play, and Daniels was terrific. I can't wait to see it again.

The Belasco is beautiful. Nice job with the ads too.

Ok so this is a tough one to predict for me: Will this fall under the classics rule and be considered a revival?
On one hand, it's the same production that was Off-Broadway, so it's not really a revival, more of a Broadway transfer that took almost 9 years?
On the other hand, according to WIkipedia it's been performed a lot all over the world in those 9 years, including college productions and such, which would fit into the whole "historical or popular repertoire" section of the Classics Clause.

My gut tells me that it will be considered a new play; despite its production history, I don't think it is as known as recent examples like THIS IS OUR YOUTH or THE CRIPPLE OF INISHMAAN.

My gut says revival. Violet certainly wasn't a "known" quantity.

But Violet was an all-new production from the original, so by the most basic definition, it was a revival. The producers (or whoever), decided to take the existing musical, Violet, and revive it. Blackbird is the same production as before, however.

Can you really call it the "same production" when it's been 9 years?

Yeah, if you play the female lead in this play, I think you get 50% off...

Yeah I definitely see what you're saying, which is part of why I was confused in the first place. But when I say it's the same production, I mean in the same sense that Hamilton is the same production now that it was at the Public, ie, same director, same set designer, etc. Totally agree that this situation is not quite the same, though, which is why I brought up the topic.

I think it'll entirely depend on how the producers want to submit and petition it. They have a case either way, honestly. Has they play been done in enough regional and ameteur productions to qualify it as as "classic" enough for the committee to just say "nope, it's a classic?"

Because there are no set criteria that define what it means for a work to be "in the historical or popular repertoire," trying to determine whether it will be considered original or revival is really just a guessing game. I think it will be considered a new play. I may be wrong. We'll find out soon enough.
