God, I spoke too soon.
Chill, people! This is just a thread . . . don't take ANYTHING personal!
spider, I can assure you that I wouldn't dream of getting upset by anything I read on a message board. There was no anger meant in my last post, whatever. I was just stating my facts. If I were anymore "chilled", I'd be frozen. Or, at least asleep.
As sorry as I am to have to bump this thread: for me, Passion. I'm done. I've given it multiple chances in different contexts and with different performers, and I absolutely can't get through it without being bored out of my mind. I just don't like the story. Aside from liking a few songs, I'm not even particularly fond of the score. Maybe I'm just not in a place to appreciate it or something, but I suspect that it's just very much not my thing.
I like Passion . . . not love . . . but like. Like I said before, the only score that I can't get through (and I still haven't heard a few of his scores) is A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM. And like other composers, there are a few songs that I like in his musicals, and a few that I don't.

I totally agree with you, although even the best shows can be awful if done poorly.
I remember seeing a touring company of FOLLIES in the 80's that was GOD AWFUL. I could hardly sit through it and it's my favorite of all of his shows.
Sondheim + Boring = Oxymoron
West Side Story, Sweeney Todd, Assassins, Into The Woods are all good!

Digging through the old threads and found this. Interesting topic. I like the points that both sides have made regarding Sondheim. I personally am on the side that just because he is one of the greatest composers doesn't make him exempt from criticism.
I might, also, add that just because someone is canonized doesn't mean that that person is above critique. In my field of literature, lots of the groundbreaking/canonized writers are critiqued. Furthermore, it is not seen as a negative that the groundbreaking/canonized artist is being critiqued. Besides, it happens in other fields as well---art, movies, etc. So it is rather naive of some of you Sondheimites to say that because Sondheim is groundbreaking/canonized that he can't be critiqued. (At least, that is the impression I am getting that that is what is said.)
I adore PASSION and am surprised so many people find it boring. I've only listened to the cast recording but have enjoyed that so much I am going to invest in the dvd (once I am not so broke).
The one Sondheim show I am not really fond of is SUNDAY. I am bored watching it, and from an academic perspective, nothing in it excited me. I did love Bernadette though.
I can't fathom a person being bored by ST. It is long but so much happens in it that it doesn't feel long.
The only Sondheim show I've ever felt bored during was Sunday in the Park With George. I really wanted to like it, but for some reason I just couldn't get into the story. Just not my cup of tea I guess.

Agreed! Even if I felt it was boring, Sunday In The Park With George is much better than a lot of what is on Broadway right now, so I'm not complaining.
As for Passion, I really adored it. I don't think it's boring, I think it is just a slow paced show. Some people dislike that, but I'm not one of them.
I really do not understand how Passion could be boring. I think it's extremely engaging right off the bat.
Passion is such an emotionally stirring work of art. I don't find ANY Sondheim shows dull. Now I am listening to Passion and its the one show that can literally turn my emotions in a snap!
That's exactly how I feel, A_F_L
