If a show is 'just okay', I do remain seated... even though it's horribly uncomfortable to be the only one doing it.

I'm all for saving the standing O for truly special occasions.

I usually stand at curtain calls, if only because I want to be able to see.

I know you. I know you. I know you.

I think it's as simple as standing when you want to stand. Full-house standing o's are probably more often the result of peer pressure and social custom than an abundance of worthy shows/performances.

That said, I think once the show is at curtain call, regard for theatergoers seated behind you is less important. If they don't want to stand , they shouldn't. If you want to offer that gesture to the cast and company, you should feel free to.

I'm sure Brantley was sitting in the orchestra, but the balcony gave Megan Hilty a standing ovation on opening night.

I was led to believe that on Broadway, SOs are only given on the opening night, if deserved. This is basically the same in the West End. I saw six productions in a week and only Jersey Boys [long running] got a standing ovation, even though all the other productions were excellent. I later went again to see Jersey Boys and again it received a SO.
I saw Inherit The Wind, Kevin Spacey was the lead, he was just fantastic as was the rest of the cast, but it didn't get a SO; I was the only one standing.

All problems are man made and so, can be man solved.

I think Best12bars hit the nail right on the head- and while I see where everyone is coming from, just like premuim seating, I don't think the obligatory ovation is going anywhere, anytime soon.

Add me to the list of people who have also decided not to stand when I didn't think it was warranted, but had to during the curtain call simply so that I could see- if one person is doing it, how many other people are? Its like dominos sometimes...sorta like when family or friends stand right up for the few chorus people they know during their curtain call and by the time the "featured" cast is even on stage half the house is on its feet already.

I'm in the I'll stand cause everyone else is standing category cause I can't see but I won't clap if I didn't enjoy the show and the real truth is I just wanted to stand to stretch my legs cause they are usually killing me after a 2 act show.
