How he is claiming that he didn't know the set piece was going to lower when there was a dress rehearsal is beyond me...

But honestly, as the post says, there should be some checks and balances, someone watching the stage that is aware of where people are and stopping the piece if a performer wasn't clear. Im just glad he wasnt hurt worse, even though he is a tool.

It is pointless to surmise what would happen if Liza got hit. Two things went wrong here. First, even if he is not a seasoned stage performer, and as his staff says, is only used to the effects in a rock show, he SHOULD know the value of rehearsal and that lingering on the stage after a number is not the wisest choice. Secondly, regardless of who did what to whom, the TONY people should have at least had the class to issue a statement saying that they regret the incident and hope he feels better. I have done a lot of shows and yes, people do get hurt sometimes, in spite of best efforts. A live stage show that is being broadcast on national TV provides more than enough challenges and activities to an SM and his/her staff. It may not be that the crew was not watching but that they had SO much to watch that they had to assume that the person on stage had gotten his/her instructions during rehearsal and would follow them. I am sorry he was injured, but fortunately the injury seems to have been minor compared to what might have happened had he fallen through a trap door. Perhaps everyone concerned will learn from the experience. What I find interesting is that the TONY team has chosen to put a lot of people on the stage who have no experience with live theater because they feel it will help ratings. What they don't always consider is the distraction this may cause in sheparding an industry newbie through the maze of sets, cast and miscellaneous people milling around backstage. It truly is a choreographed ballet and when it goes wrong, it can cause real problems.

If you watch the clip he had plenty of time to hit his mark. Everyone else did. He was too wrapped up in the glory and not paying attention to where he was supposed to be and what he was supposed to do.
Live television is a very difficult thing to pull off seamlessly and it requires EVERYONE to be hyper vigilant as to what they are supposed to be doing at every moment.
You can be damned sure that Liza is aware of that and as spacey and as much as a train wreck she appears, she knows how to hit her mark!

FWIW, they ran through the opening number twice at the dress rehearsal, and he was AWOL for the first run-through.

Well at least the Tonys are getting some publicity. My take is that the Tony Team should get audited. Many mistakes were made and CAN SOMEONE CLEAR UP WHERE NICOLE KIDMAN WAS?
