You forget though that they have a weekly nut of about $1.2 to 1.3 million. Most weeks their BARELY making it by, and a lot of weeks their not making it.
But we are not discussing that here. It did FANTASTICALLY well this week, but it also had 9 shows.

Posted: 1/5/12 at 1:29amSpiderman has made its nuts nearly every week of its run, usually a few hundred thousand more than that and often significantly more. It's the show of choice for tourist families with young boys and should be able to play for at least another couple of years.

You're aware that SPIDER-MAN is going to have to perform at full capacity for over five years to even break even, right?

I'm also aware it's not the greatest show ever written. Still, I don't think any show deserves to have misinformation spread about it. As for your claim, it would take less than 5 years at capacity to break even, given premium pricing, but have no belief that it will play at capacity in any year. Still it's doing better than most people expected, no?

Not really. The money it will lose could pay to produce two new Broadway shows. Or feed a small third world country. Not much to be proud about.

I'm not sure I follow your logic, Blaxx. I can't predict how the show will do ultimately and I'm not sure you have that ability. But I do believe it's been profitable most every week it's played and was very profitable last week. I did not read many predictions about this during most of the past 14 months. Since it's playing a theater that's had trouble holding on to a tenant, I can't say I'm disappointed that it looks like it will be there for at least a while longer.

Fingerlakessinger - "You forget though that they have a weekly nut of about $1.2 to 1.3 million. Most weeks their BARELY making it by, and a lot of weeks their not making it."
Hey Finger, what are you talking about? Spider-Man has cleared over $1.2 Million for 49 out of the last 52 weeks. In other words, only 3 times this year they haven't hit the $1.2 Million mark....I wouldn't consider that 'a lot of weeks'. So before you start making false statements like that, make sure you do your research...like I did.
Blaxx, what do you mean 'not really'. Spider-Man has been one of the most successful shows on Broadway this year. It finished 3rd this past year by grossing over $70 Million...Wicked and Lion King were the only shows that grossed higher. And if you include this last week, they'll have made over $73 Million...not bad for 1 year. The also have the highest grossing week on Broadway of all-time. And yes, that is a lot to be proud of. Again, you guys need to do more research before you go around bashing shows and making erroneous statements.
.
Have a Nice Day

"Spider-Man has been one of the most successful shows on Broadway this year."
Whenever I suspect that the herd may acquire a semblance of good taste, statements like this provide a reality check.

Posted: 1/5/12 at 3:50pmWhy are people who cite box office facts members of "the herd" with bad taste? Clearly, broadwayfever's use of "successful" has to do with Spiderman's grosses in comparison to all other Bwy shows. You can trot out the brickbats of quality or nut with which to hit Spiderman over the head but this is a "Broadway Grosses" thread and a few people are merely pointing out some simple stats.

My statement referred to the herd who are going to see this awful piece of Death in the Theatre.
I thought that was pretty clear...

Unless you have facts regarding the weekly nut, then being the highest grossing show doesn't mean much in comparison to what the show's profit is. How much of the investment has it paid back? What I was trying to say, is that the show could still close as the biggest flop in Broadway history, losing more money from its original investment than other show has lost before. Time will tell.

Posted: 1/5/12 at 5:24pm^The discussion was centered around how Spider-Man is doing right now and not as to how it will do in the future. Someone made the comment that the show was still doing better than most people expected and you replied with "Not Really". That's why I did a little research and provided all you doubters with actual Broadway Gross stats...to show you guys how well it's doing. As for how it will do in the future or whether it will be considered a flop in the future, that's a different topic for a different thread. In the meantime, Spider-Man is doing very well at the Box Office.

Posted: 1/5/12 at 5:31pmWell, my comment was obviously not directed at the present sales. I hope the show can run for decades, it obviously brings business to Broadway.

Posted: 1/5/12 at 5:56pmWell I hope it closes so that all of those actors and stagehands will lose their jobs.

Posted: 1/5/12 at 11:37pmI wonder how long Priscilla will last- i LOVE the show but must admit that with such Precentages i don't know how long the show will last =(. I adore Priscilla and have my fingers crossed that it will still be on Broadway when i come back to NY in March and June- is that hoping too much?

Also, you have to note that Spiderman was closed for a month in May. The show probably lost money overall in 2011. The $70m it took in is gross gross, you need to sub about $8-9mil for cc fees, pension fees, etc. Then you have the $1.2m nut x 52 weeks is $62m. Probably have added expenses for rewriting the whole thing, lots of restaging, etc while it was not playing.
If it keeps these numbers up it should make a tidy profit in 2012, but I don't think it made a dime in 2011. Not with a 1.2m nut.
