Good holiday weekend jumps, bad holiday weekend falls.
Before we start another "gee, when's Producers gonna close?", just look at it's weekely take.

Nice to see Les Miz playing to above 100% capacity. The Grinch also made quite a jump, but that's not surprising considering the holiday season is kicking into high gear.
Hopefully High Fidelity will improve in it's second week.

ugh!
Spring Awakening and Little Dog Laughed. Not too good. Both fell during the holiday. Not good.

A Chorus Line with it's best week ever!!! First time at/over 100% & $900K. It doesn't get any better than that!! And by looking at the total seats sold, every SRO spot was sold this week giving ACL a complete sell-out. Not one seat/spot empty.
And is it a mistake with The Color Purple's top ticket only being $115?? I'm almost positive their top ticket is $250.
any show that didn't do good that week might as well pack it up soon(The Producers, Rent, The Color Purple).

THE COLOR PURPLE usually does fine, just a bit slow right now, at least i hope it will do better in the coming weeks
but SPRING AWAKENING and HIGH FIDELITY- quite sad numbers!
otherwise, congrats to A CHORUS LINE!

Is Little Dog Laughed going to last until December 16th? I don't know what its nut is, but <$200,000 is pretty sad. I really want to see it.

The Little Dog Laughed is a play with no marquee names in it, so of course it's going to flounder, but I'm sure it will stay open through the holidays.
I guess bringing The Grinch is was a good idea.
And I'm sorry ACL, but none of those shows are going ANYWHERE. They're all doing fine.
I think the shows that went down are the ones that the tourists aren't familiar with yet, and that's why they've fallen. Is there even a Spring Awakening/High Fidelity poster around Times Square?

Posted: 11/27/06 at 10:48pmWell, ACL's only crediental for closing is that it dropped during the holiday week. It's not an upbeat/fluff musical, so I don't think many people are going to want to go see it during the happy holidays.

Posted: 11/27/06 at 10:54pmHigh Fidelity played a first week of shows. It's not THAT bad.

Posted: 11/27/06 at 10:59pmColor Purple had a slight drop in attendance, but in fact, grossed $30,000 more than the previous week. And the average ticket price went up $12.00. So while there were slightly fewer people in the audience, they paid more to be there. Again - it's a huge stretch to call it a "bad" week. Specious, even.

Hoorah for us poor SRO folks who put Les Mis over 100% this week.
Pretty much every SRO spot was taken the day I was there.
Quite a sizable jump for Phantom...will it likely sustain those numbers through Christmas? With that nearly-full attendance I figure I might try SRO for another British dinosaur I haven't seen in a couple of years.
Eek, hopefully this does not become the norm for Spring Awakening...

"It's not an upbeat/fluff musical, so I don't think many people are going to want to go see it during the happy holidays."
Many tourists think ACL is upbeat and a fun musical. They think it is about some nice people in a kick-line.

I believe Rentboy was referring to COLOR PURPLE not being upbeat/fluff (ACL is the poster who made that statement about it closing).
CP grossed over $900,000 last week (which, I believe, means it made a profit of some $300,000). Not only will it not be closing any time soon (give it a few YEARS), but given its high name recognition and popularity thus far with tourists, I'd be very willing to bet that it'll be back grossing well over $1 million during the holiday weeks (as it has been for most of the year).

While The Color Purple is obviously not going to close for years, it is peculiar that its attendance went down Thanksgiving weekend. Even if the gross was higher, that's still strange for a show with such popular appeal.
At least more people got to see Jay Johnson in his final week.
And as for The Little Dog Laughed, I just don't think it was meant for a Broadway transfer, despite enjoying the play immensely both at the Cort and at the Second Stage.

I'm very much surprised that attendance for Little Dog Laughed has not picked up, the show in a way reminds me of Souvenir, in that Souvenir transferred based on a unanimously praised performance by the leading actress that never managed to find an audience on Broadway. The difference is that I find Little Dog Laughed much more accessible to a Broadway audience and the show also features names that should be somewhat known to tourists and theatre-goers.
I'm even more surprised that Spring Awakening played to such average capacity, especially when people are deeming it the new Rent. If my memory does not fail me (alas, I was 16 when Rent started playing previews on Broadway) Rent was doing great business from the second it transferred--correct me if I'm wrong.
Interesting that in from allf the major off-Broadway transfers so far, it is Grey Gardens the one that seems to be thriving.

Well, RENT had almost deafening buzz back in 1996 partly due to the ton of press it got nationally following Larson's death. It was next to impossible to get a ticket for the run at NYTW (I only got in because I knew someone affiliated with the production) and when it transferred to the Nederlander it was the hottest ticket in town (it was soldout SRO even before the reviews came out and stayed that way for its first few years).
In contrast, SPRING AWAKENING was never totally sold out for most of its run at the small (less than 200 seats) Atlantic
Theater and discounts were always readily available. It's never had much in the way of "buzz" -- though it certainly has its fans -- and is facing a rather uphill struggle in trying to survive at the O'Neill.
LITTLE DOG similarly was never a sellout hit at Second Stage and is struggling to find an audience at the Cort.
