Pinto, selling really cheap tickets do not a successful show make. (Unless you have a lunatic dumping millions of dollars into the enterprise, and a landlord who doesn't have another show to put in the venue at the time such that they would exercise the stop clause.) I say both are DOA because that's what I hear, and I trust the mouths I get word from more than the ones you do.

It's cute that you seem to like underdogs, but at some point reality sets in. When they close, the 3 shows you seem to be rooting for will probably have cost people somewhere in the neighborhood of $50 Million. That's a lot of money! Do you not worry about the cost of providing you with underdogs?

On another thread (I don't feel like searching for it again), Phillypinto said that some show "literally blew me away!"

Would that it were the case, literally, like so much dust in the wind... What was once endearing, then humorous, became crass and boring, and is now insufferable.

I sincerely hope that you spend as much time studying as you do being a ridiculous presence here. Clearly the study of language and communications is not in your curriculum.

You are not helping the cause for taking "millennials" seriously. Instead you perpetuate the notion that you are all a bunch of knee-jerk reactionaries, self-absorbed and living simply from media-bite to media-bite. Fortunately, I know many wonderful "millennials" so I know that the stereotype is just that.

Ljkstheatrescene, nobody is talking to you! If you don't like my comments, please ignore me instead of taking the time out of your life to complain.
Hogan, i was never rooting for Honeymoon in Vegas. I simply said that they would stay open til Tony Award nominations. You're the one thats saying that shows are DOA even before they open. Thats a little ridiculous. I doubt Gigi and It Shoulda Been You will be selling cheap tickets for long. They are in previews for god sake. Its cute that you act like you know everything about the business but all of the statistical number bs you say doesn't always stop shows from closing right away. The business is so much more about numbers like risk and hope for example. Something that you never take into account

Dude, I always take "risk and hope" into account, but at some point the rubber has to meet the road. If you look I did not speak about Shoulda and Gigi in absolutes (like you almost invariably do): what I said was that the "seem to be DOA." It is of course possible something will happen to reverse their fortunes, but you can't prognosticate intelligently based on hope untethered to fact. You say you never rooted for Honeymoon. One of the nice things about the internet is that you have the ability to go back and re-read things. I suggest you re-read everything you wrote about Honeymoon and see if you want to amend you statement.

Phillypinto, serious and honest question here. If you aren't really rooting for HinV, then why do you take it almost personally whenever someone suggests that it could possibly close before Tony season? Why does it matter that much?

Philly is right. I have read positive comments about both of these shows on this board. I know several people who liked Gigi, as did I.

The wolfpack bullying on this board is getting worse than ever. It's appalling.

Have the Tony nominations come out?

No?

Then no one is yet wrong.

@After Eight-

I am delighted that you and others liked Gigi. I have read few if any posts suggesting that people should not like or dislike what they like or dislike. In fact, one of the few people on here who regularly bullies people for what they like and don't like is you. In psychology, that is a species of what is called projection.

Nothing in this thread has been about whether anyone should like or dislike Gigi. In fact, the person you have bizarrely chosen to side with has not seen the show. Everything being discussed has to do with the show's prospects. I can (and often have) loved a show dearly, but recognized that it was not going to succeed. That's what we call clear-headed thinking, and for whose of us interested in such things, separating mind and heart is the sine qua non of an intelligent discussion. I would think you are capable of wrapping your head around the notion that saying that a show seems to be DOA is not a reflection of personal taste, but rather of an assessment of its ability to find an audience and succeed in the commercial environment in which it is being presented.

One can obviously have a discussion about a show based on personal tastes, but that is not this one, and it is not bullying to bullying to tell someone that a show that they are seemingly rooting for is not likely to make it. It may be disappointing to them (in this case, that seems weird since the person you are defending has not even seen the show) but adults should be able to have a discussion of the realities of the marketplace without it being labelled "wolfpack bullying." If you have reason to believe that Gigi is not DOA, then by all means share them. But all I ever read from you are complaints about the marketplace and some silly castigation of folks for not liking what you like. Is there a reason you cannot understand this concept?

Years back, many pundits on the board declared Memphis was not only DOA but basically a piece of dog excrement. No matter how much you dislike a show, this goes beyond the pale as far as nastiness.

In any event, Memphis went on to play for a number of years & won a Best Musical in the process & spawned a London production. I enjoyed see many on this board eat a large order of crow on that one.

I see what I want to see . I no longer champion a show. I am sad for state of Broadway and why there is so much viciousness on the board directed at people and productions. I do not feel sorry for investors. They know the economics of Broadway and the success/failure rate. I find it hard to believe that so many people would invest in so many rotten shows.

If I see a show & like it, I state it. The same when I do not like one. No longer am I begging & pleading people to see a show. It is not my job. If they see it and like it fine. What I do not like is people hoping a show would close.

But you DO keep telling people how you no longer do it. Over and over again. Constantly telling people you won't be championing shows, which I am sure has done some serious damage on Broadway revenues.

@Roxy-

There is a difference between prognosticating that a show will close and not liking it. they are two different animals. To say that a show should close because of one's personal reaction to it is an opinion (e.g., it is dog excrement); that's not what's at play here. To say a show should close because it is losing more money each week than is reasonable, and with no prospect of a turnaround, is an entirely acceptable subject for discussion. I did indeed say, based on everything I have heard and read, that I think Gigi and Shoulda are DOA. That's no reflection on the quality of the shows, but simply an assessment of its prospects. As I said in another post, I have said this about shows I dearly loved. I also dearly love the Yankees, but I don't think they will win the World Series this year. It's called being objective.

"I know this topic has been beaten to death but any show that plays at the Paper mill is at a big disadvantage coming to Broadway. Honeymoon played well in Millburn which is only a train ride away from nyc. People who were anxious to see this saw it at the Papermill, why would they pay higher prices to see it on Broadway?"

I don't know. The shows have short runs so not everyone has the time to get out there. Plus, personally I'd totally pay more to see it here (since you have to factor in the price of the train ticket there and back) and here and I don't have to worry about missing my train home. I don't think Papermill is a strong enough excuse for a show not selling well.

I am a bit disappointed at The Visit's grosses. Agree it isn't a good start.

On the other hand, FUN HOME had a respectable first week given the size of the show.

I'm pleased that Zhivago rhymes with Chicago. And they are next-door on the list.

Why don't you go? Why don't you leave Manderley? He doesn't need you... he's got his memories. He doesn't love you, he wants to be alone again with her. You've nothing to stay for. You've nothing to live for really, have you?
