Beautiful was never a massive monster smash, but it did SRO business for the 6 months following the Tony awards, but I think this mostly had to do with Jessie Mueller's star turn. Many forget how much of a draw she was for the production and grosses noticeably dropped after she left.

Motown was the last SRO monster Jukebox musical playing to nearly 100% capacity and gross potential for its first year. Unlike Ain't Too Proud, it was nearly universally panned by critics, so grosses tapered off after its first year. Add to that the show had a weekly nut of over $1M due to Barry Gordy double dipping for royalties for music and creative team credit, along with paying the other artists for their catalogs. It only dropped below $900K twice during its entire 2 year run, which say a lot for how expensive the production was. I honestly wonder if Ain't Too Proud will have similar problems since they are also licencing their music from Barry Gordy and Motown. Its also why despite running nearly 6 years Rock of Ages barely recouped its initial investment as they had different royalty rates for each song.

The advantage Jersey Boys and Beautiful have/had is that they dealt with song writing teams which are much more flexible for their song royalties instead of corporations.
