Broadway Grosses: Week Ending 6/18/17

If by this time next year the only musical from last season to still be open is Come From Away, I'ill be shooked!

I know DEH will be open, but I'm too curious to see how the show works without Platt.

while Platt is wonderful, I don't think he is irreplaceable. I think this is on the order of some of the roles in Hamilton, and I think that, like Hamilton, the star of DEH is the play not the specific performances.

1. I love having my opinion (or my facts) challenged. What I don't love are unintelligent challenges.

2. I did not present anything as fact, and I defy you to identify where I did. My issue was with folks hijacking a discussion of finances to state, for the umpteenth time, what their personal opinions on shows are. Who cares? (And secondarily with you for imagining that a confluence of result somehow validates the latter in some way.)
"

By negating all posts in the thread, and responses to your positions, as illogical or unintelligent it would seem to mean you believe your opinion to be fact that cannot be challenged or proved incorrect.  Your initial post included nothing that had not already been said by those you were claiming to be unintelligent or emotionally involved.  When challenged, your response was merely a pithy one-liner, perhaps something less condescending and more measured and substantial would have changed that perception and invited the intelligent discussion you claim to want.

I would say this is/was one of the few threads here that hadn’t been hijacked by personal opinion and spiraled down into nothing more hurling insults about shows and posters. Or, even worse, asking what time to show up for SRO/Rush/Cancellation.  As it is purely a reactionary topic, unfortunately that means there is going to be repetition of posts from week to week, unless something truly amazing or catastrophic happens numbers-wise.

While some may have included their opinion of a show as a small part of their response, the majority included mostly discussion of the numbers that we have available to us.  The odd “die Charlie die” being an outlier. Of course, people are going to focus more on the shows they favor, but inclusion of their personal opinion does not invalidate their view of the facts/numbers.  And, if you can't handle reading both, then ignore the thread.

The truth is none of us can really have an in depth discussion because we don’t have all the facts, such as weekly nuts, advance sales, or upcoming shows wanting a certain theater.  All we can do is posit theories based on the current grosses and, anecdotally, things like seeing that a show that has 500+ tickets available on line for a large number of future dates is a cause for concern.

You claimed that intelligent discussion cannot involve emotion.  I would say that this thread is proof of the opposite. For example, the shortcomings of a show like Groundhog Day are being readily acknowledged and discussed even by those who are fans of it and therefore have an emotional investment in how it does at the box office.

In fact, the entire field of film/theater/music theory and criticism is centered on scholarly work on a subject the historian/critic has an emotional attachment to.  Would you agree?

first of all, I in no way negated all the posts because a number of them agreed with me and still others tried to respond with logic and intelligence. But you miss the point entirely if you fail to appreciate why one's personal take on a show (as opposed to an assessment of a show's overall reception) is logically irrelevant to a discussion of a show's prospects (and of course that discussion is one of opinion's and guesses, as I and quite a few others have demonstrated by our robust convo on the subject).

Your first post in this thread is: "An intelligent discussion of financial issues requires one to be untainted by personal feelings about a show. Way too much of what's in this thread is really just a variation on the tired theme of likes/loves/dislikes/hates."

Sounds pretty dismissive to me.

You are also late to the party, jumping in on page 3.  You simply agreed with/restated what others had said before you, not the other way around.  Not sure how you can claim to be part of a "robust convo" when you have added nothing new or of substance to said conversation, besides, as I said, repeating what has already been stated and ignoring that which you deem irrelevant.  If anyone has derailed this thread, it is you.

Perhaps, if you read the posts before yours, you would see that people were accounting for both their personal opinions and those of the majority when it comes to the success of a particular show.  It can be done, just takes a willingness to participate not dominate.

However, your real goal seems to be to win the internet, so I bid happiness in your pursuit.

1. The issue is not dismissiveness. If you want me to say that I am dismissive of people who talk about what they like and don't like when the subject is financial, then yes I happily plead guilty. I didn't think I needed to explain that to you.

2. I chimed in because what I read was embarrassing. There is no requirement that I "keep up."

3. If anyone has derailed anything I think it is you, but we can disagree about that as well.

4. Finally, I have no interest in winning anything except the lottery.

Getting back to the Grosses, how much longer do we think Cats will last? It hasn't had strong Grosses since  the new year following down to about 650k-800k depending on the week. It can't be a cheap show to run with how large the cast is. Will it be gone by Labor Day?

Maybe though it is one of those shows that is being produced with monopoly money so it could run until the landlord waves goodbye.

I thought I remembered reading ALW saying something along the lines of them anticipating it staying till after Christmas and then go on tour.  (It was around the time Sunset opened)

"What is all this joy about Bandstand's grosses going up?  It will remain in the 500-600's until they throw in the towel. Same with GHD. They are not smash hits that tourists are flocking to.  And imho both are mediocre shows."

The joy is some people like myself and others really liked Bandstand and hope it has a decent run. Yes, those are not great numbers but I am rooting that it can make it until the end of the year.

I read somewhere that Bandstand has "well heeled producers", so they're willing to fund it for a while while it finds its footing.

I really hope Groundhog Day improves.... Met Andy Karl at stage door last night and he was really patient and kind with everyone there. I had no pre-expectations and was very impressed with him.

It seems like a lot of people are seeing Bandstand but it's impossible to really gauge from what it looks like outside the theater before the show because it's such a s*** show. They've got Come From Away, Bandstand, Great Comet, and Dear Evan Hansen on one street with narrow sidewalks and way too much regular foot traffic (where are those people going?) and they still wait to let people into the theater to get through security. But good for them if the numbers are actually going up. I haven't heard from anyone I trust yet but all the word of mouth has been positive.
