Is... is this a real comment?
Isn't the Old Vic not considered the west end?
The Old Vid is kind of like the public. It can't really extend for an infinite period of time. The show needed to transfer to a West End theater. I LOVE the show, but I don't think this was the season to come in. With a show that has such name appeal - which I think honestly turns most people off - it probably would have been smart to to move to the West End, considering it had won a few Oliver's, and go with that, and then move to Broadway.

if that GHD makes it past labor day it will be a miracle.
It's such a great show, just a shame it came in the wrong season. This was the "off-Broadway" season, and I don't think audiences wanted a movie adaption.

ANDY KARL has updated his social media with photos that signal he may be depressed about not winning the TONY ... it must be hard even though it seems like he grew quite an ego this season... I wonder if he's already auditioning for other shows??
"He has? I met him a few weeks ago and he couldn't have been nicer."
He hasn't. Skimbles' just fickle. He signed/posed for pics at the stage door for 30 minutes the Monday after the Tonys when I'm sure all he wanted to do was go home and decompress.
ebontoyan - You didn't miss anything. Someone's just overreacting.

Speculating about someone's mental health based on a couple of social media posts seems a bit... much. I'm sure he was disappointed but it's not as if him losing should have come as a big surprise or anything. He's clearly beloved in the community and still got plenty of awards love this season even if he didn't win the big award, he'll be fine.
It's unfortunate about Groundhog Day but ia, it came at a bad time. Had it been a weaker season I'm sure it would have done really well, box-office wise and awards-wise. It doesn't help that the show doesn't seem to have done a very good job marketing itself.

Especially since he didn't post anything remotely like that...
Some people just need to relaxe...

What's with all the Groundhog Day alarmists? It's making more than its nut, and I don't believe anyone is clamoring to take the theater.

What is all this joy about Bandstand's grosses going up? It will remain in the 500-600's until they throw in the towel. Same with GHD. They are not smash hits that tourists are flocking to. And imho both are mediocre shows.

Agreed. And no, the Old Vic is not the West End. It's a nonprofit. So not only is it a real comment, it's a perfectly valid comment.

I agree - a lot of factors have affected Groundhog Day's performance, and it's hard to read the tea leaves as to which way audiences will lean in any one season, but I definitely think the tone of the promotional work has been one of the biggest factors working against them. You can't find an audience if you don't know how to market to them.
Philanthropy is a dance number, it neither showcases Andy Karl's talent nor Tim Minchin's lyrics. Seeing You is a lovely song and a great showcase for Andy but it's the emotional payoff for the audience - without the build up it might seem a little saccharine. I think they should've used something lighter from Act One to highlight the humour and snark which is a huge part of the show's appeal.
An intelligent discussion of financial issues requires one to be untainted by personal feelings about a show. Way too much of what's in this thread is really just a variation on the tired theme of likes/loves/dislikes/hates.
At this stage the shows that are in flux are not at extremes in either direction, but GHD's fortunes do not seem promising and Bandstand's are (at least for now) on an upswing. Both can and will persist for the time being.

Right, which is why intelligent discussions have basically ceased on this board.
Oh, we have so few of those anyway!

And yet your conclusion is the same as what the "unintelligent" folks have been saying so...
Intelligent discussion and emotional investment are not mutually exclusive.

Does anyone know what Great Comet's nut is with Groban and without? I imagine that along with the million dollar weeks comes a big payout to Groban. Wondering what the drop in cost will be when he leaves in comparison to the drop in sales. Asking for a friend.

Very intelligent discourse on your part.
well the illogic was so startling I was at a loss for words. A stopped clock is right twice a day and all that.

I'm sorry having your opinion, which you presented as fact, challenged has put you in such a quandary.

I was just about to ask this. I figure it must be a beast to maintain, what with a giant cast, a ton of tech requirements, and all the little handouts that they need to keep in stock for each show (pierogis, egg shakers, letters, etc.). Plus Josh definitely doesn't come cheap, even though it's clear that he's doing it for a love of the show and not the money.

1. I love having my opinion (or my facts) challenged. What I don't love are unintelligent challenges.
2. I did not present anything as fact, and I defy you to identify where I did. My issue was with folks hijacking a discussion of finances to state, for the umpteenth time, what their personal opinions on shows are. Who cares? (And secondarily with you for imagining that a confluence of result somehow validates the latter in some way.)
