Broadway Grosses: Week Ending 7/9/23

very bizarre that even with the holiday that Kimberly with a best musical win couldn't fill the house the last two weeks
"

Mmmm. Is this becoming the lowest performing best musical winner since Passion? I’m so surprised and thought it would be doing better. Hopefully things can pick up or I wonder if we might be looking at a Labour Day or January closing if it starts to lose steam?

Counting previews, PASSION ran for 332 performances, HALLELUJAH BABY ran for 315 performances, and A STRANGE LOOP ran for 306.

KA is currently at 308, including previews

If this was a movie it would be rated R due to language. I didn't create the rules - I'm not saying they are just - but the cursing in KA is not PG13 as defined by many tourists.

I was more thinking attendance than anything else RE: Best musical winners - the Passion attendance was pretty low the entire run. A show couldn't survive like that on Broadway anymore like that I'm guessing. And since then I believe most best musical winners have had stronger attendance (as in % of 100) since they won the award until this point in the timeline than KA, including a Strange Loop. Could be wrong.

Give me claws and a hunch, just away from this bunch.

Per the MPAA rating system, a movie is allowed a certain (but unspecified) number of "f*cks" before going from PG13 to R rated status. It also depends on "how" the word is used -- it's all very arbitrary. I'd imagine that KA would easily be a PG13.

Let's not forget that KA has been running on Broadway for what, nearly 9 months already? People who wanted to see it or were slightly curious have already seen it. I think that's the major reason it had a miniscule Tony boost. ASL got a huge boost last year because it was a relatively new show that opened in April, so if anyone had a doubt, they ran to see it after its best musical win. The fact that KA has been on Broadway for a while, not going to affect its post Tony attendance, I'm afraid.

Both Band's Visit and Gentleman's Guide... opened in November of their respective seasons and both got huge boosts from winning their Best Musical Tonys.
