Kudos to all of those that are using this time to better institutions as well as themselves. May we all emerge better, strong and more aware and involved than we were previously.

Great article....but omg I just scored center orchestra to Wicked!! Omg I’m gonna be at the opening of Phantom! Omg are they gonna change Phantom? Who’s gonna replace Karen Olivo?! Omg it should be like Nicole Pussy Cat doll girl! Omg I’m planning my trip to see like 5 shows in 3 days!!!
THESE have been the posts that have dominated this message board. The article above and your comment, Macbeth, should dominate this board. Again, thanks for posting it.

With apologies to Walt Whitman whose birthday it is today:

This board is large, it contain multitudes.

Seems like it effectively allows for all kinds of conversation and posts, ones with which people can choose to engage and ones they can choose to ignore.

I think it’s a bit hard to discuss an article that appears to be behind a pay wall. Also, people on this forum are probably often speaking about viewing theatre rather than how theatre is created and the issues involved because they are theatre fans not theatre professionals.
Give me claws and a hunch, just away from this bunch.

Fair enough. Still glad the article was posted though.

True. Many are excited for theatre to come back. I am one of them. We are swept up in being able to discuss it like we used to. However, much has changed and needs to change. We can do both (be excited for theatre, but also be aware of what's going on and be of service to helping). I will try to do both and I hope others do too.

There are a lot of complaints in this article with the actor's union, and I have to think that producers are rubbing their hands together behind the scenes, pleased with the fact that the union is being weakened and distracted by these internal conflicts. All the money and time being spent on improving inclusion and diversity mean they're not being spent on wages, benefits, and working conditions.

Wages, benefits and working conditions are a part of inclusion and diversity.

Eh? I guess in a sense. But the Union was already losing a major battle with companies hiring non/union actors at half the cost and zero benefits. And I think with this past year it will only get worse.

I’m seeing lots of one-person shows or actor/instrumentalist shows. It’s gonna be rough regionally for awhile.

No, they're really not. Inclusion and diversity can be successfully decoupled from wages, benefits and working conditions. Capitalism loves to pull cute little tricks like that, especially American capitalism. But it's not a question of either/or. They need to all be fought for... as long as it's not left solely to POC to fight for wages, benefits and working conditions for all of us while they're also fighting just to get their foot in the door.
