Broadway Rooftops

Broadway theatres used to use their rooftops for drinks/snacks and even for cabaret/vaudeville-type performances. If you Google it, you can find pictures of the rooftop stages. With a focus now on the outdoors, do we think this trend of the past could ever return? Obviously it gets cold in NY, but they could do use heaters like many restaurants. It feels like such a beautiful homage to the past and an accommodation for our modern world.

no. aside from the fact that there would be terrible logistical and safety issues, we are not going to have performances on Broadway without audiences sitting indoors on top of each other. So why would we worry about pre-show and intermission?

Your post reminded me of this Ham4Ham! Just realized it was posted on Youtube 5 years ago!

NYC is not Los Angeles - it does not “get cold.” In summer, outdoors is hot as balls at night and in winter it’s cold as f***k at night.

I'm aware of the cold of NYC and that there are safety issues. But it was done once, and I'm sure it COULD be done again. Just a thought.

They did announce that Radio City is turning its rooftop into a park! Cool idea!

I agree it would be fun but remember that the idea of safety today is different than in the past. Even forgetting about railings and the like, I can't imagine the egress is compliant. I don't consider the weather any more of a factor (actually, less of one) on a roof than on the sidewalk or street where we are enjoying eating and drinking.
