Usually as a little souvinear from each show, I buy one of those overpriced keychains to add to my normal keychain. Is it just me or are those things made of some easily breakable material? Every keychain I have ever bought has broken, except maybe for two (one of which fell down an elevator shaft - another story). My Phantom, Beauty and the Beast, All Shook Up, Sweet Charity are all broke - the hanging thing broke apart from the keychain. I probably have a couple of more that I can't think of off the top of my mind. Even the pewter Spamalot thing broke in half.
Is it just me and I'm having bad luck? I have plenty of other non-Broadway keychains that never break.
I love my SEUSSICAL keychain. Made of rubber. Indestructable unless you saw it in half with a blade.
I always look for keychains for shows I love enough to purchase a souvenior for. However, except for SEUSSICAL, all keychain designs suck. I want a good one for SPRING AWAKENING, CAROLINE OR CHANGE, and AVENUE Q.
Well, keychains are often made from brittle plastic and they get a lot of abuse, so it wouldn't surprise me if they broke easily. I've recently been collecting magnets from shows. I put them all on a metal steamer trunk. Kind of looks like the stickers people used to put all over their trunks to show all the places they've traveled to. Mine shows all my Broadway "travels."

I purchased a metal Avenue Q keychain over a year ago, and it's still going strong. Aside from a few scuffs I'm sure I could buff off, it's perfect!
i have one from Chicago that I put on my car keys. Consider I throw my keys/drop them a lot, that little keychain is holding up really well.
I love show keychains, but usually have problems with them, even if they don't get much use.
The worst are the rectangular ones made of clear plastic with the show logo inside. I had one that got no abuse - it was always in a side pocket of my wallet - that broke after a very short fall onto a Starbucks counter.
The ones with a screw-type closure are another problem compared to the split-ring sort. I've lost two Les Miz ones because the threads aren't cut well and they don't stay closed.
The only ones I don't have trouble with are the brass "tickets" which I love, but not too many shows have them and they're a little bulky if I just want to toss my keys in my pocket when I'm just running out for coffee and don't want to carry a purse.

I had two of them from Millie, had trouble keeping the little gold ring from stretching apart and the red paint got chipped. But my Avenue Q is much tougher and still going strong.
My favorite souvenier though is magnets. My fridge is covered with them.
I bought a Wicked one to send to my friend in Australia, and it survived that trip.
i used to have a rocky horror one where the picture was a sort of hollogram. It broke, but after a number of years of use.
tarzan has new loin cloth type keychains that look really cute.
Purchased in 1999, I still have on my keychain, the original FOSSE brass keychain, shapped like a derby. It's with the original logo (see below) before they switched to the bold one. The keychain is still prestine after all these years!:

My Spring Awakening keychain is amazing and won't break. But on the other hand my Wedding Singer and Wicked one the part that holds it broke like you said. It pisses me off too because theyre a big size.
The only keychain I've ever bought was the Seussical one and like capn said it's made out of rubber so I'm pretty sure it will out live me...
latley I've been more into buying buttons and putting them on my backpack. right now I have an altar boyz button that gets a lot of attention.

I have a key chain from The Boy From Oz, Avenue Q, The Producers, SpamAlot, and Jersey Boys. The Jersey Boys one is the one currently with my keys.

My WICKED (it was a birthday present, don't hate) broke like that too. You're not alone.
I have a pin board where I put pins/buttons I collect from just about everywhere I go. I try to get a pin at every Broadway show I go to, but seeing as how pins are not very high up in the merchandise department not all shows have them. In those cases I usually do buy a keychain from the show and hang it on my pin board, so there's not much damage done to them there.
I will say that the pins are not always very well made either. Before I got my pin board I would put them on my backpack and they didn't last very long on there. After a few bumps the pin usually breaks off and then you've lost the pin forever.
Weird that people keep saying they all break...
I collect keychains and have Broadway ones that are like 15 years old and have never fallen apart. In fact, I've never had one break on me...
I just don't use them at all. They all hang from a giant hook in my bedroom and I just add to it when I get a new one. I recommend not using them if you want them to stick around. It has worked for me.

I got a brass one from "The Pirates of Penzance," which was the first show I ever saw in a Broadway theater, twenty years ago. I use it everyday. It's indestructable. I've used it to scrape gum off shoes, open paint cans, etc.
I do have other keyrings like the one from "Fosse."
I use them as Christmas tree ornaments.
How gay is that?
My Avenue Q one broke apart from the keyring. Thoroughly Modern Millie's leg fell off... I don't think she'll be doing anymore tap dancing anytime soon.
I don't have any keychains, but I have a Chicago pin with two little handcuffs hanging down from it, and the clasp thing doesn't work. Lame.
The only one I have is from The Boy From Oz. I used it for the longest times on my house keys, and it held up pretty strong. Now I just display it in my room.

I can't see getting a key chain and not using it. I arrange mine so that it shows face up from my car ignition for all to see.
I too collect Key chains from all the shows i go to see, the only two that have broke off were Chicago and Avenue Q, my RENT one is holding up the best followed by Millie. I'm gonna have to get a new Avenue Q and Chicago one though since they fell off somewhere and I haven't a clue where they are.
