I'm about to leave NYC to go to Northwestern, needless to say I'm pretty devestated about leaving NY. I was just wondering what upcoming Broadway shows are previewing in Chicago. The Woman in White cancelled it's Chicago preview, which I am very upset about cause I didn't get to see it in London cause my family wanted to see Mary Poppins...

Connor- check out broadwayinchicago.com and also chicagoplays.com. No, we don't have as much as NY, but its a good theater town. And Northwestern is an AMAZING school. If you like Shakespeare, www.chicagoshakes.com performs incredible shows, usually very creative. You'll learn to love it here!

I know the Martin Short show is previewing in Chicago and I heard that A Tale of Two Cities was going to preview in Chicago as well.

(Martha Graham from a letter to Agnes de Mille) "There is a vitality, a life force, a quickening That is translated through you into action, And because there is only one of you in all time, This expression is unique. If you block it, It will never exist through any other medium And be lost. The world will never have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is, Nor how valuable it is, Nor how it compares with other expressions. It is your business to keep it yours, clearly and directly, To keep the channel open. You do not even have to believe in yourself or your work. You have to keep open and aware Directly to the urges that motivate you. Keep the channel open. No artist is pleased. There is no satisfaction whatever at any time. There is only a queer, divine dissatisfaction, A blessed unrest that keeps us marching And makes us more alive than others."

700 Sundays is coming. Also, the Shakespeare company on Navy Pier is very good. And it's a bit of a hike from the city, but the Marriott Theatre in Lincolnshire usually puts on very good shows. I know they're doing Footloose in the fall, and I think Millie sometime around February-ish.

yes, a tale of two cities is going to have a pre-broadway try-out at the chicago theatre...so no connection with broadway in chicago. Purlie is playing at the Goodman theatre in september till mid october, and i think that is going to broadway too.

also for half priced tickets (our version of TKTS) go to hottix.org

Also Dame Edna will be at the new La Salle Theatre

And even if they aren't big road shows, the Goodman and Looking glass theatre have AMAZING shows ALL year. I love chicago!

*And don't forget the Appletree theatre...small, but exciting! And I believe Dessa Rose is going to be there this season...

When is Dame Edna going to be at the La Salle theatre? I could only find dates for New Orleans and Ottowa.

minor threadjack: From one Wildcat to another, congrats! Enjoy your time in Evanston and/or Northwestern's excellent student theater.

No worries, Conor. We're not NYC, but we have a great theater scene here. I highly recommend checking out some shows at Steppenwolf, especially in their Garage Theater. Tickets are cheap enough to fit a college student's budget and the quality of the work is outstanding. There are also quite a few other schools here in the area who put on fantastic shows. I've been to a show at Loyola University and it was fabulous. Welcome to Chicago! Have a great time!

Well, technically speaking, Northwestern is in the suburbs, so you aren't really in Chicago. But seriously, Chicago has the largest theatre scene in the country, it just isn't commercial theatre like Broadway. Also, check out hottix to get half-price tickets to shows, and unlike tkts, a lot of shows let you buy in advance. By the way, congrats on being at Northwestern, my cousin starts her sophomore year next month and really likes it. Just don't become one of the pretentious Northwestern students that the school is notorious for metriculating: the ones that think they are THE best at everything. In other words, me :o)
