re: Broadway in April

"its hard going seeing two shows in a day, if I was going to do that I would see a show I have seen before, two new shows in a day is hard."

I'd see two shows every day if I could fit them in - and could afford it! lol My record whilst in New York was 11 in 8 days in 2007:
The Pirate Queen, Curtains, LoveMusik, Company, Legally Blonde, Falsettos (in New Brunswick NJ), Spelling Bee, Spring Awakening, 110 In the Shade, All About Us (in Westport CT) & Deuce.

And in answer to your question - I always book well in advance - I just don't want to risk flying across the Atlantic and maybe missing a show I want to see. And also I'm too old and decrepid to stand for hours in the TKTS line. lol

re: Broadway in April

It is expensive to book in advance, I might do so myself next time through playbill special offers, saves the bother of getting to tkts at 3, so not to be disappointed.

I done 10 in 8 days. Phantom, Les Mis, Tarzan, Wicked, Spamalot, Avenue Q, Drowsy, Mama Mia, Annual Putman spelling Bee. Took a day out to go upto Niagara Falls.

New York seriously takes money out of you.

re: Broadway in April

Last year when TKTS was under the Marriott hotel we got some matinee Young Frankenstein...no queues at all.
So TKTS may be OK time wise for matinees, less for evenings.
We're there for 5 nights..last year 5 shows..maybe a matinee as well extra.I try to use codes and allow one full price (but maybe 2 this year).
Next to Normal sounds worth trying.

re: Broadway in April

I learnt the hard way about seeing two new shows in one day when I came to London for Xmas 2007. I saw 7 shows in 4 days and can sadly remember very little from all. My schedule was:
Wednesday matinee: Wicked
Wednesday night: Lord of the Rings
Thursday night: Sound of Music
Friday afternoon: Avenue Q
Friday night: History Boys
Saturday matinee: Hairspray
Saturday night: Mary Poppins

Can anyone else beat 7 in 4 days?

re: Broadway in April

No, but my 3 in a day was fab!
I would never complain about seeing 2 shows a day!- why would you!

Barnum -2.30pm - London Palladium
Best Little Whorehouse In Texas -5.30pm -Theatre Royal Drury Lane
One Mo' Time -8.45 -Cambridge Theatre.

re: Broadway in April

It is good to see two shows in a day, but hard to remember the show as a lot to take in.

If I went back to New York, you have to see two shows a day, to get value for money, but on the day when two shows are on, I will only do one new show, then see one I have seen already, as not to overcrowd my memory.

re: Broadway in April

Its not possible to see 3 shows a day in New York, just in the glorious West End.

re: Broadway in April

The only times I've gotten to see 3 shows in a day is in Edinburgh during the Fringe - which is why I love the Edinburgh Fringe! (saw 8 in 3 days last year!)

Btw, it is theoretically possible to see 3 shows in a day in New York: on a Saturday, you could see Altar Boys @ 2pm (90 mins), then Forbidden Broadway @ 4pm and just about any other show @ 8 pm. But it might require some serious running between theatres lol - and meals would certainly have to be "to go".

BA have just slashed their Business Class return tickets to just £1,099. That is nearly half price.
Credit crunch does bring rewards to some.

Yippee! lol I can fly 3 times to New York and back for that in economy. And I'd have to get a really cheap deal to fly over with BA again from Heathrow Terminal 5. I flew last time from Terminal 5 and thought it was horrendous (just much too big). This next trip I'm back with good old Virgin from Terminal 3.

re: Broadway in April

Yea I'm not keen on BA after they lost my luggage last October and I got it back just 3 weeks ago.
I much prefer to jump on a Virgin!

re: Broadway in April

I love to see how the other half live, as it happens Virgin have just slashed there economy rate to £225, that is more in my price line.

Its not the cost of airfare whats expensive, the hotels are very dear.

re: Broadway in April

Well thankfully Dad has an apartment on 44th, between 3rd and 4th. And he just happens to be away on a conference the two weeks i'm there :)

I always stay at the Herald Square hotel - great location and pretty cheap for New York. It's quite basic but perfectly okay and it's well worth going without luxury for the amount I save. They have single rooms that are cheaper than anything else I've found in Manhattan other than hostels or real dives. The rooms are tiny but I only use my room to sleep and store my clothes so the size doesn't matter.

re: Broadway in April

Why pay a fortune for a hotel room when all you do is sleep there maybe 7 or 8 hours tops!
#44

re: Broadway in April

Bob had a look at your recommended hotel and priced about $199 a night, still very dear.
#46

re: Broadway in April

Phantom - I've never paid anything like as much as that there. The rate I'm paying while I'm there in May is $99 per night for a small single room. If the site is only showing $199 as the cheapest availability it's just because all the cheap singles are sold out. I always book well in advance - if you do that, you should be able to get the single room at $99 (I always have.)

re: Broadway in April

I've passed the Milford Plaza many times, never been in it but it seems pretty upscale. But, you should check out The Pod Hotel http://www.thepodhotel.com/ I've heard many good things about that!

Also Forbidden Broadway closes today I think... and Mama around the Holiday time you may be able to catch an 11 AM show in New York =P

Boyfromoz, I'm not sure when you're coming over but Robin Williams is doing a limited engagement which closes on May 3rd but, chances are it will extend (I would put money on it).

After '9 to 5' I highly suggest stage dooring. Stephanie J. Block is an absolute doll and just talking to her will be a highlight of your trip, I promise!

While you're over hear you might also want to check out the Blue Man Group, I've never seen it but it's supposed to be quite the show and it's theatre is close to, if not in China Town which could be fun.

There is also God Of Carnage as well Rock of Ages(if you like 80s music).

"I much prefer to jump on a Virgin"

i've joined way too late in this conversation to now make a smutty remark about this..but Mama, know that if i had been here quicker there would have been one :)

re: Broadway in April

The Milford Plaza is a huge hotel..lots of school parties as well as tourists. We've stayed there a few times and the last time, (4 or so years ago?), they'd renovated some of the rooms compared to previous stays..but it's really whether you're lucky and get a decent sized room or the proverbial broom cupboard. Mid price I'd say, not cheap.

re: Broadway in April

Could someone help be out with the location of the stage doors of the Palace, the Hirschfeld, the Marquis, the Broadway, the Lunt-Fontanne, the Rodgers and the New Amsterdam?
