re: Broadway in April

Most of these are next door to the main entrances unlike in London when they are down side streets.
*The Palace is around the corner to the rights you leave the theatre right under the fire escape- cant miss it.
*The New Amsterdams stage door is on 41st St directly behind the theatre.
*The Broadway is around the corner to the left as you leave the theatre.
*The Marquis satge door is just off Brodway around the corner from the theatre entrance next to the theatre shop selling posters, tshirts etc and behind a pillar!

Honestly, most theatres on Broadway have the stage doors next to the main entrance on the same street and thats where you'll find the Lunt-Fontanne, Hirshfeld and Rodgers stage doors.
You wont need a map!!!.

I love this theatre shop, also a great theatre shop up Broadway, about opposite the Winter Gardens, can spend hours in there!

re: Broadway in April

Sounds like your on about Colony REcords? Lots of sheet music ad CDS etc! Its the biggest rip off shop in New York- browse but dont buy. Go home and order it off Amazon!

re: Broadway in April

Great tip, thanks I bare that in mind, when I went in there I bought the Playbill guide to New York theatres a great book, snapped it up as it would cost a lot on p&p.

re: Broadway in April

Just had a look at the Herald Square Hotel at various dates around September - November, the price I get is for a Queen (no pune) for 3 nights for $747.

Looked also around May - June for 3 nights and again I am getting a deal for 3 nights for $597, both these not including local tax.

Love the opportunity to get free tea and coffee, nice 1st thing in the morning while getting ready.

Wishing for wounds I will look into the Pod hotel too.

re: Broadway in April

Looked at the pod and the rates are very good and the rooms are not as claustrophobic as I first thought, hey its even got a window, which I like.

re: Broadway in April

The Queen rooms are not the cheap single room I book, so they're obviously sold out for those dates - not surprising for rooms as cheap as $99 a night. But keep checking - when I was looking to book my May trip back before Christmas the first few times I looked it only stated availability for Queen rooms but after checking back a number of times later I suddenly found a single $99 room WAS available - probably cancellation.

And the free coffee machine is fab -really good quality selection of capuccinos, etc. 24 hours - and they always have free cookies, cocolates next to the coffee machine in the lobby!

re: Broadway in April

Do you look on there own website, or do you go via hosting sites, such as Expedia, Last Minute etc.

I would prefer a queen bed, but my jaw drops when you have to pay an extra $100 a night, so therefore the single is more suitable.

re: Broadway in April

I book on the hotel's own website. You won't find cheaper deals for this hotel elsewhere. The single bed is small but the mattress is VERY comfortable. Also the rooms are very small but how much time do you spend in the room? It's well worth it for the price.
Btw - another plus is all the rooms have a free in-room combination safe.
This has been my first choice hotel for the last 5 times I've been to New York. I save so much on the price of the room I can afford to stay more nights and see more shows!

re: Broadway in April

I definitely go for the $99, single room, always on a lookout for cheaper accommodation, New York generally is very expensive, one hotel I stayed in was the hotel 31, which when I stayed there worked out about £40 a night, I had to pay an extra £20 if I wanted a room with a shower, I didn't have my own shower in the end as I was happy with a shared one and save £20.

re: Broadway in April

someone mentioned the podhotel and that one is pretty good! There us a bagel shop just down the street "Ess-a-bagel" and they have the best bagel sandwiches in NY! They are HUGE!

Since i got some input on West End shows, let me give back some on Broadway (or Off) shows!

Little Mermaid - don't bother unless you get them for free! I thought it was dreadful and I've seen/heard of people walking out. I was pretty tempted to!

In the Heights - maybe because I went in with high expectations, I didn't care for it AND I'm billingual so I was able to understand it. But overall, people like it.

Shrek was cute and entertaining but nothing spectacular.

I'm going to see Hair in a few weeks and hopefully Blithe Spirit and Waiting for Godot.

I'm gonna see South Pacific in April but definitely catch it!

But I'm going over to the other side of the pond and can't believe at how cheap flights and hotels are, especially in London!
I once heard someone describe her (Ruthie Henshall) singing as sounding as though she's trying to swallow a whole meatball slightly larger than her windpipe. (The same person compared Michael Ball's singing to sounding as though he's sitting on a washing machine on spin cycle and Colm Wilkinson's to a man with a paralyzed lip trying to eat cottage cheese.) --- Schmerg_The_Impaler

re: Broadway in April

Now last year I said exactly the same about New York!..but this year..exchange rates have a lot to answer for.

re: Broadway in April

Which helps us on this end opposed to paying $150 for a 75 pound ticket

re: Broadway in April

When I went to New York with my parents and sister last summer we only had 3 of our shows booked. Those were Legally Blonde, Little Mermaid and Mamma Mia!
In the week, I saw 10 shows, and got all the others on the day.
[tos] I bought about 45 minutes before the show.
Rent we tried lottery (and lost) but got the Mezz seats for $40 after the lottery.
Spring Awakening I got a student rush ticket on the morning and saw the matinee.
Young Frankenstein got a student ticket like an hour before the show for $37.
Bought my student ticket for Gypsy on the way to seeing ATOTC for the matinee, which i got half an hour before the show started.
For Xanadu, we got our tickets literally 2 minutes before the show started. Sat down and the lights went down.

Im never a one for buying tickets in advance, always get them on the day unless I can get a really good deal. Being a student it often pays off to get tickets last minute.

Going to NYC again in August and I think the only shows we will be booked for in advance will be 9 to 5 and Shrek (and that is only if there are good discounts out for them).

re: Broadway in April

The only student ID I have is my ISIC (Internationl Student Identity Card). Would rushes accept that or does it have to be a college/uni/school issued ID?

re: Broadway in April

"Which helps us on this end opposed to paying $150 for a 75 pound ticket".

Now the boot is on the other foot, we have to pay £106 for a full price ticket and £47 at tkts.

I would be tempted to go to tkts for my Shrek ticket.

re: Broadway in April

'Shrek' has been at TKTS since day one.
You would be surprised at how many shows, hits or not, are on there on a daily basis.
#69

re: Broadway in April

Its been up there for years as has Phantom on a daily basis..

re: Broadway in April

Phantom of London, and that's even IF Shrek is running that long!
No rumours of it closing but I don't think they are doing well when comparing the running cost to how much they are making.

re: Broadway in April

Thanks for the link Boyfromoz, I did not realise New York tkts done a daily page, I have seen the one for what is on sale that week.

Shrek and Little Mermaid look precarious to me as both on sale Saturday night and have high operating costs.
#72

re: Broadway in April

In reference to Phantom's comment: sadly I can see another string of closing notices posted just after the Tonys - The 39 Steps, Avenue Q, August: Osage County, Next to Normal (if without any Tony wins) and at a BIG stretch Shrek, Little Mermaid or Mary Poppins. Of course I am not wishing hundreds of people out of work, but by looking at the grosses its my guess some shows are on their last feet.

re: Broadway in April

The reason Mamma Mia! was at 94% capacity last year was partly because of TKTS. They sell a good number of their seats each day there (as do Phantom and Chicago).

re: Broadway in April

The recession has hit New York really hard, shows closed prematurely which would not of happened the economy was more stable, I am talking of Hairspray here and possible Legally Blonde and Young Frankenstein. However Grease deserved to go it was a pile of ****!!!!!
#75

re: Broadway in April

I think Young Frankenstein was due to close anyways. There was a really interesting interview with one of the producers (a polite realistic one, so therefore not Mel Brooks) in the New York Times in December 2008. He pretty much said that it was on its last legs anyway.

Premature closings - definitely Hairspray. Maybe Spamalot and Spring Awakening?

Grease definitely deserved to go, as it does in the West End. Hopefully Legally Blonde (which I think was semi-confirmed in another thread) will bring a bit of artistic integrity to that theatre.

EDIT: I never I thought I'd type "Legally Blonde" and "artistic integrity" in the same sentence, but in comparison that revolting cash cow currently running at the Piccadilly, anything has "artistic integrity"
