Broadway Legend Joined: 8/2/15
With so many “legends “ passing away I’m curious who you would like to see take to the stage one imore time.
- Barbra Streisand
- Julie andrews
- Chita Rivera
- Maggie smith
- Ian McKellan
- Helen Mirren
- Bernadette Peters
- Joel Grey
All of them in the same show. Who’s gonna write the adaptation of Cocoon for them?
Bernadette is the youngest of that list. I'd like to think she's got at least one more Broadway role in her.
- Barbra Streisand & Julie Andrews –– No. Both have said they don't intend to act on stage again. Both have indicated that they'd consider directing a stage production, but I would not hold my breath.
- Maggie Smith –– No. producers were willing to move heaven & earth to get her to do A GERMAN LIFE on Broadway (which she did at the Bridge Theatre in '19), but apparently doesn't want to do NY theatre.
- Chita Rivera and Joel Grey would be a unique circumstance, as both are over 90 and neither is a box office commodity based on their recent work.
- Ian McKellan was gearing up to do LEAR here but Scott Rudin swooped in with the Glenda Jackson production instead.
- Helen Mirren and Bernadette Peters are still in their 70s, not quite the same age class as the others; with them it would just be a matter of finding the right role/show. With Bernadette especially, it's conceivable; I'd love to see her do a nonmusical play (which she hasn't done on Bway since the 60s), but saleswise people want her to sing.
For me the biggest question surrounding theatre "legends" is: Will Mandy Patinkin ever do a full run of a musical again?
