Interesting Article in Chicago Magazine.
p.s.
“You know what our number one rule was?”
Spider-Man never sings in tights
"Bono went so far as to say that the songs in the musical were some of the best he’d ever written. The Edge nodded in agreement."
Forever swathing himself in humility, comme toujours. Someone give that man a Nobel Prize. Oh. Wait!
Great read, p.s. Thanks for posting
In all fairness, I don't think you get to make it too big in this industry without KNOWING you write good stuff!
It's also a hyperbolic statement that what you are currently working on is "the best" you've done.. No one would say: well, thie stuff Im hoping you'd buy next is only mediocre.
"In all fairness, I don't think you get to make it too big in this industry without KNOWING you write good stuff!"
I'm of the opinion that Bono hasn't written "good stuff" in about 20 years, so that's an odd thing for him to know, doncha think, since it's not something he can really know?
And I gots to stick by my original sentiment. Calling it his best stuff makes him sound like an asshole... even if he believes it. I understand *why* he's doing it. They're selling a product. He's a brand name himself.
But Sondheim and Kusher don't strut around with their new works going, "This is it. Finally! This is the best stuff I've done!" because they, like all legitimate artists, understand that art exists neither in statis or in a vacuum.
Bono's already got his stuff packaged up and ready to peddle, no qualifiers.
It may be business as usual, but it still makes him sound like an asshole.
Whoawhoawhoa- How to Dismantle an Atom Bomb was an EPIC and GRAMMY WINNING album. "Vertigo" is one of U2's best songs ever. Ok, it was no "Joshua Tree," but it was still brilliant stuff.
Can I just say this phrase distresses me?
"From the sound of things, it wouldn't be shocking if Spider-Man opens even later than January 11th, especially now that the show will miss the big money-making Thanksgiving-Christmas holiday season.)"
PLEASE NO.

Another delay to the first performance is VERY unlikely, but I wouldn't be shocked if a few other performances wind up cancelled for extra tech work.

So they will start performances if tech work isn't completed? There's a difference between being completed and "fine-tuning". With all the known problems, I wouldn't expect previews to begin until December.

I, for one, am voting for Spider-man. I think Mr. Riedel is an asshole and most of the negative voices here just bitchy.
As Ms. Taymor has stated, in this economy why would we not offer our most generous support to a production that is employing over a hundred workers (cast, crew, house and administration staff).
Let's give Spider-man a chance. This is the creative energies and hard work of a lot of people.
And, Mr. Riedel, I have one word for you: karma.

Because if the same money were spread over, oh say, six shows there might be even more people then 200 employed.

+1

This is an EXTREMELY complex show. When they make changes during previews, I would not be surprised if more performances are cancelled. Not saying it will happen. Just that it might.
I hardly think it's egotistical for Bono to honestly think this is his best work. Are artists supposed to have no opinion on their work? Is their audience the only legitimate judge of art? We are all certainly welcome to disagree with him, to find his other work better, but I don't understand why it's egotistical for a person to take two things they've created and say, "I think this one is better."
If he was saying that it was the best score on Broadway, that he should have a Tony, that it was better than other people's work, that'd be different.
