Raul Esparza and Brooke Shields are 5 years apart. Is that really considered cougar-ish now?

Plus, Esparza certainly doesn't look like a "cub."

Why do you have to be so condescending? I said I don't know that it will read so much that she is older than him as that she is too old for the part. There's a difference. I said the former was a thought that crossed my mind. A possibility. I have not seen her in person in a long time, so I don't know how it's going to look. She is gorgeous. But she is also not thirty. I'm not interested in actual ages, I care what it looks like on stage. And I think it works best if Marva is rather obviously younger than Jonas. So even if they look the same age, I don't see that as ideal. So again, that's more likely to be the problem. I used the cougar example to make a point. Relax!

I think casting someone Shields' ages bring a different dimension to the role that works equally as well.

With someone around forty, Marva becomes a person who has been stuck in a dead end place in her life for a long time. With her having a young-ish child, the implication is created that she has had to sacrifice even more for everyone else around her, which heightens her need to "start over" and make the sort of transformation she does through her relationship with Jonas.

While their height difference could be a visual issue, I think she and Esparza will read completely contemporary in terms of age.

somethingwicked, yes. Those are some of the reasons why I said earlier that I'm starting to come around to the idea, and am hopeful that it could work, albeit in a very different way than it has worked in the past. There's not really an "everyone else around her" for whom she has sacrificed -- just her son -- but your point still holds. She lives for that kid.

How tall IS she? Like 6 feet?

Well she did say during her run in Chicago that she didn't want to return to Broadway until she could actually originate a role. Looks like the time has finally come.

Since this all began because of posts on ATC, there had also been a post on ATC a while back saying that the role was going to someone who had done some Broadway, but had never originated a part. So that's in line with it, too.

At the end of the day, Raul can't really carry a show in a commercial world. It sucks, but that's the reality. And even if the general public views it as "the Brooke Shields thing," which they very well may do, it's still really Jonas' show. But that's just the way it is. Hopefully they will click and work well together. I think they could have great chemistry.

Could someone tell me how many demos of the show there are? I only have a 3-track demo with Brian d'Arcy James and would love to hear more of the score. Can anyone point me in the right direction please? :)

I know nothing of this show, but am assuming it is based from the Steve Martin movie from the early 90's, so PLEASE let me know if I'm totally off base.

I'm willing to see anything with Raul. ANYTHING. I've never seen Shields on stage, but even if it becomes "her musical" who cares if it helps get people in the seats. (But I don't know if she would actually be any sort of draw at this point in her career.) I just hope it (like any show) is worthwhile and exciting.

Yes, it's based on the Steve Martin film from 1992. The book was written by the screenwriter along with Glenn Slater, who wrote the lyrics, and the score is by Alan Menken, who I pretty much regard as a god among men. The basic story is the same, but one of the subplots has been cut, some other minor changes have been made, and the result is, IMO, a huge improvement on the film. I didn't care for the movie and was unsure after seeing it as to why anyone felt the need to turn it into a musical, but once I saw it, I realized why. Along with the plot changes, the story just works so much better as a musical. The score is the strongest part of the show (and neither of the demos I have heard really shows it off properly, IMO), but Raul's performance is really the heart and soul of the whole thing. Like I said, I'm already willing to go out there and say it's his best work since Company. I'm really sad that I can't get out to LA to see it full-scale. The scheduling is just impossible for me, but hopefully all will go well and it'll finally get to Broadway this year.
