wow! Well I didn't know you were kidding. Thought you were really there. But yup, the crowd did go wild here in Denver and there were a number of ovations during the show. And most people here that saw it agreed that the book was not great (And when it was here, it had an audience participation segment that I hear they took out. Thank God. It didn't really work) but overall found it to be highly entertaining.

See...the thing is...for the most part, the first wave of audiences for a show are the locals...people in NYC as well as the tri-state area. They usually carry a show 6-8 months. Then the tourists kick in.

Reviews will, however, affect that first wave. This show does not have a built-in audience like Dracula (name recognition and Wildhorn fans) or even Bombay Dreams (lavish spectacle and the 'cool' cache of Bollywood).

It's a much harder row to hoe for BKLYN.

Plum - People join this board for all sorts of reasons. Some just to rave about the newest spectacle, some who rarely discuss Broadway unless it's to bash certain other posters or specific shows whenever they are mentioned, some just to hit-and-run inflammatory remarks, and the few that really are interested in discussing all the shows as a mutual topic of interest. If indeed there are shills, which is never actually proven, but just assumed by anyone who joins and mentions something nice about a show that the majority feel is not Broadway-worthy. They get pummelled in a McCarthy-esque witch hunt that reveals nothing but cruelty in frighteningly large quantities. That is why I am mystified by this behavior. It's like watching a lynch mob in action. What next? A scene from The Crucible?

Matt, the thing is, there was a BKLYN shill who repeatedly took on sock puppet identities. That person kept showing a similar (and unusual) pattern of behavior with every username, so it was sort of obvious. I don't go around shill-hunting, but I really hate it when I'm convinced someone is one. And I resent people who just join a board to piss people off, or to sell something, or to lie.

We're all a little leery of the people who love BKLYN, when people en masse were descending on the boards like a murder of crows raving about how brilliant Saint Eden was and the show is going to be grate and blah, blah, blah...the newbies just don't know what banal twittering we've been subjected to for the last six months?...eight months? Man, it's felt like a damned eternity!

Borstalboy - This is not unique behavior. It happens with every spectacle or cult show. All you have to do is not read the threads. The twittering of Brooklyn has been miniscule compare to Wicked or Millie. If people like it, so what? Let them enjoy it and discuss it as much as they want. No one is forced to read the threads and no one is prevented from starting new ones.

Plum - If there are sock-puppet Brooklyn threads, then they will post no matter what the response so that is just wasted negativity, but every new thread about someone who likes Brooklyn doesn't mean they are a shill, either. Even if they are, so what? Shills aren't the only ones who lie or deceive on this board. They are trying to promote a show, which, come to think of it, is actually a GOOD thing. The bottom line is, what good does it do to lynch a shill? Well, nothing, really.

Nothing personal here, just venting...

I'm not going to my serious place today. It's being remodeled.

Seeing as how the-B-show just opened, I've been curious to read the various info and reactions to the performances and reviews, but when I see someone post something nice and get crucified, it just makes me kind of sad.

Not serious-place sad. Just sad.

There's long-time posters here, like uncageg, who genuinely like the show, and that's their right. But when someone joins the day after the (less than critically successful) opening and makes a post entirely in shill-speak (even if it was by accident), can you blame people for being suspicious?

I'll back off now. I honestly don't want to spend all my time here fighting people. And I also don't want to let irritating things in my outside life cause me to act horribly here. So...be back in a while. :)

All the shilling in the world is NOT going to undo those horrific reviews, it just ain't gonna happen. Let them have their fun, it's not wasting anyones' time but theirs and it amuses us so very much.

Cougarlady, after reading your post, I feel I must enlarge your vocabulary as you blatantly misuded the word mediocre, which means "of moderate degree or middling." This is not the word to describe the reviews we've all read... perhaps you menat to use the word "morose?"or "god awful?"

It's very possible it was a hit in Denver. URBAN COWBOY was a huge hit with the tourist trade in Florida and elsewhere on the road before it trainwrecked on Broadway.

I have to confess, I dont know much about the show myself. It sounds... well, intruiging, but in the same sense that DOTV was intruiging or Hasselhoff playing anything is intruiging. Maybe they were going for a more adult version of AVENUE Q, but without the puppets?

I honestly dont know what motivates producers these days. From the shows that have been tossed out there, it certainly doesnt seem to be the profit potential. That's not to say that everything has to cater to the tourist trade, but honestly, looking at the seasons over the past few years, I really have to ask: what are these people thinking?

There's a reason why the show was a "hit" and got "standing ovations" in Denver...

NOTHING ever comes to Denver. This was their first big preview. Hell..they would applaud a garbage bag.

Opps..guess they did.

Note to producers of bad shows: preview in Denver.

The Denver Center is one of the most acclaimed regional theatres in the US and home of NTC which is a kick-ass conservatory/MFA program.

(Not that that makes Denver well-versed in Broadway-bound musicals, but it's not artistically bereft.)

The fact remains this piece of crap got good reviews from the Denver press for no reason. It was even worse in Denver than it is now. If one can believe it.

And they liked it?...come on.
