There is NO WAY POSSIBLE it could get up for best musical, as much as I would like it to.
The nominees will be:
Spamalot
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
Light in the Piazza
Little Women
-----------
Brooklyn would probably be next or even All Shook Up, but only 4 shows can get nominated. Brooklyn would probably be nominated before Good Vibrations and Dracula however.
EDIT: melissa errico fan beat me to it!

I'm being told to get a life from someone using a fake name on a message board challenging people to a 'debate' that will 'go down in history' about the Tony Awards?
Man, the definition of 'having a life' must have changed when I wasn't paying attention. Or maybe the rules on Cosmo's planet are just that different.

Benzy-
You're still right, even though I beat you.
After all, you're a Broadway Star and I'm just an understudy.

Posted: 1/22/05 at 8:50pmSpamalot, DRS, Piazza are probably locks for Best Musical at this point. Little Women is probable, but don't forget Chitty Chitty Bang Bang -- $12 million musicals always have a good shot as far as the Tony nominators are concerned. And heck, even All Shook Up might be in contention -- some of the reviews out of Chicago were pretty decent ..... it certainly has a far better chance than Brooklyn which received the worst reviews of any show in the last couple of seasons.

how quickly we forget DRACULA. even though I liked it...

Posted: 1/22/05 at 8:52pm"Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" is very bad. Saw it in London, and I can't believe it made a transfer. It would have to do smashing box office and get better than decent reviews to be considered, but that's just me.

Cats, I remembered DRACULA. I just thought it would be good taste not to mention it.
And I've heard lots of negative feedback about CHITTY and I'm sure it's all true, but you never know with the Tony committee when it comes to really expensive shows like that. If the reviews really slam it then it's out and Little Women is in, but if reviews are mixed (as Little Women's probably will be on Monday) then what the committee decides to do in May could be really interesting.

Posted: 1/22/05 at 9:10pmMargo, you think Light in the Piazza has a better shot than Little Women? Probably, but I think nominators would put Little Women first because it could tour because of its name, which is also the reason Chitty might sneak into the nominations.

Is CHITTY really only a $12 million dollar musical? In today's scheme of things, that number sounds low to me.
Of course, you may be correct, Margo, I have no idea. (And before anyone says "What does it matter?" let me paraphrase my favorite quote from Thomas Mann: "Art is only interesting when examined obsessively.")

I seem to recall $12 million for CHITTY's cost, but it might have been $14 or 15 million. I can't remember. It's a LOT of money, whatever the actual figure is.
I'm guessing that Piazza is this season's "snob hit" -- respected but not loved by critics or audiences. The Tony folks like to pretend that they support "ART" so they usually give a nomination to the snob hit, with no intention whatsoever to give it an actual award later on (mind you, I'll probably love it -- as I did Caroline or Change last year -- and get labelled "pretentious" by the Brooklyn lovers on the board).
The only absolutely sure bets are Spamalot and DRS. I think Piazza is the likely third slot because it's the kind of show the nominators feel like they SHOULD nominate. It'll be for Little Women, Chitty and, as a long shot, All Shook Up, to fight it out for the 4th slot. Just my speculation.

Brooklyn Beats The Critics...
They pummeled critics and audiences with their insipid music, awful story line and community theater hysterical performers.
I say sue.

Posted: 1/22/05 at 10:12pmmay I ask why you are all starting up a heated tiff about the freakin tonys and how brooklyn beat the critics? Who the hell cares? Brooklyn can be tossed out if they go below a certain number 2 weeks in a row which was said. Shows dont sign on like actors.. also, unless you're a tony voter , you do not know who and what will be nominated so please stop fighting over this petty crap and post in a topic where no one has to make bets or fight.

I cannot WAIT for Light in the Piazza :)
I love all the performers especially Sarah Uriarte Berry.. is her role big enough to qualify for supporting actress if she is good enough?

WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD. READ NO FURTHER IF YOU HAVE THE DESIRE TO BE SURPRISED ABOUT THE BASIC PLOT ELEMENTS THAT EVERYONE AND THEIR SISTER WILL KNOW BEFORE SEEING THE SHOW.
PIAZZA is about a girl and her mother touring Italy. The girl, who at first you think is 14 or 15, turns out to be a 24 year old woman with a learning disability that gives her the mind of a child. The mother is suffering through a miserable marriage, and has run away to Italy to get away from an abusive husband. Clara, the girl, falls in love with an Italian, Fabrizio, who also falls in love with her. The musical is about the resolution of these characters: Margaret, the mother, who claims to want the best for her mentally slow child, but who in reality really wants to hold onto her and keep her a child because she will have nothing left if Clara leaves; Clara, who IS a child, mentally, and just wants to be loved; and Fabrizio and his Italian family, who want various and sundry other things, like starring in the final season of The Sopranos on HBO. Wait, I made that last part up. But you get the gist.
