I guess they're taking the Tom Hanks role in a more comedic direction with this adaptation, given that Nathan Lane did the workshop and now Norbert Leo Butz is evidently doing the Broadway production (both actors are accomplished dramatic actors as well but, ya know).

That's disappointing. I was really looking forward to Nathan in this.

I don't get the casting of Butz unless the role is RADICALLY different from the film.

I think the "confirmation" is from the caption on the picture of Norbert and Aaron Tveit from Fifty Words' opening night, that says "The stars of the upcoming 'Catch Me If You Can' Aaron Tveit and Norbert Leo Butz". Or at least that's the only place I can find with that information.

Those two men together - holymoly. amazing. I could see Butz playing the role with a real sensitivity. Even though I never saw Last 5 Years, I bet that was a good display of his more serious side. Somebody correct me I'm wrong!

I'd vote Butz over Lane any day! I can't stand seeing Nathan Lane hamming it up and stuff. It just wouldn't meld well with Tveit and his style of acting.

I think you're judging Lane on something like The Producers, and would be curious to know how much of his work you are familiar with. Anyone who saw him in Mizlansky/Zilinsky, Lips Together, Teeth Apart, Love! Valour! Compassion!, Dedication, or Butley knows he is capable of much more than what you call "hamminess".

Let's not slap a generalized label on one that could just as easily be applied to the other. BOTH of these men are hams when they want to be, but both are also capable of good dramatic acting.

I felt Butz was a total "Ham" (I hate describing people as meat) in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.

I saw Butz in Last Five Years...he was great. He was also pretty damn amazing in Cabaret. I think he'll be wonderful.
