I went through all the posts I could find, except the 10 page discussion- and could not get my answers. And I was wondering what anyone knew about the song "Why Should I Wake Up?" from Cabaret. Where does it comes in the show, what's the set up, and why was it cut?

I have to perform this song for a class and am having trouble finding a detailed synopsis or script with this song included. Maybe I'm not looking hard enough- but if anyone knows of any books, websites or info they can share that might be of some help- that would be awesome. Thanks!

Not one of my favs, but it was sung by Cliff and Sally in the original show. It really is just about Cliff meeting Sally, etc.

it's on the double disc jay records studio CD after "Tomorrow Belongs to Me" and before "Sitting Pretty". Gregg Edelman and Maria Friedman are awesome on that CD. It's one of my favorite cabaret recordings.

It was midway through Act One...sort of in the "Maybe This Time" slot.

And click on the link below for a synopsis.

It is on the 1966 original Broadway cast CD (on Sony/Columbia masterworks.) It's a pleasant song bland and not up to the rest of the show.

Story wise it comes 2/3 of the way thru Act I.

Cliff and Sally have been living together a few months and Cliff expresses his contentment with the situation. After the song Sally tells him she is pregnant and Cliff agrees to take on some of Ernst's smuggling assignments to get some money.

In the 1998 revival it was replaced by "Maybe This Time."

Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!

I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

BTW, it sucks that "Why Should I Wake Up?" was cut. It's a very nice song, and it's ridiculous that Cliff, who is one of the major characters in the show, no longer gets his own song.
