While watching this movie i remember saying to myself surely they cant fit any more cliches into this train wreck of a movie, but low and behold they did and they kept coming thick and fast.
The young cast did pretty well with what they had, but that simply wasnt enough to make the film work.
And tell you now they would never get the right to use all of those musical numbers. Just never gonna happen.

man... i'm gonna agree with breakingthecircle... i'm not one to threadbash either but this thread is ODD... i feel like we've had this disucssion last year, then the year before, then the year before that... oh well... that being said... CAMP is an OK movie... it would not translate well to the stage and it could NEVER be the next RENT... i don't even see how that comparison can even be made!

Camp is not a great movie, but I don't think that it set out to change any lives... am I wrong? Most of the time it purposefully pokes fun at itself and there's some very funny moments where it sends up the over sincerity. I look at Camp as a bit of an in-joke, and looking at it like that I can enjoy it, but it's not a masterpiece and it doesn't really say anything particularly exciting.
And of course: Anna Kendrick is incredible. You have to love her.
"Oh save the speech, rummy. She's f****d, I'm ready, and the goddamn show must go on. So let's get cracking, shall we?"

Sleeth - my screen name is not to do with the movie. Or anything really.

My implication to it being the next RENT was only in that it would appeal to young people. And it's got all the positive role-models to do just that! WHY exactly have some people said that it would not relate well to the stage? It's a film about people performing on stage! How would that not translate??
AND - if this conversation has taken place "again and again... this year and last, etc". then I must not be the first person to mention it!
OK...anyone with this much enthusiasm for a project must just be dying to play a certain character from the film on stage.
I'll ask...
SLEETH, which character from the film do you think you are just perfect for in the Stage version?
Honey, I could stare at your beautiful picture all day, but I just can't support you on this one! CAMP bored me to sleep.

It was fun the first time.
A little disappointed in the storyline but I loved the dark-haired girl who sang The Ladies Who Lunch.
Over rated is the best word to describe this below decent movie.
I'm sure there's a real movie here to be made. Hopefully not involving egosentric StageDoor kids.

It's a terrible movie. The musical numbers are fun but - with the notable exception Anna Kendrick - the acting is really really really bad. It was clearly shot on a shoestring budget, and that shows, particularly in the lighting. There's that scene where they're singing in the barn or whatever and the door to the outside opens and all you see is a yellow glare.

I liked some of the musical performances in Camp, but I thought the movie as a while was really stupid.
I thought the movie was okay. The soundtrack on the other hand is better than the movie!
Who would play Stephen Sondheim in the stage version?
how dare you compare CAMP to RENT!
I'm so offended
Dancin': I have no desire to be IN the show. That would be asking for some REALLY bad acting! LOL
Love the movie. No desire to see it on stage.
How could you love the movie, but not want to see it on stage? That's just weird.

I was going to ask how this tread can keep going strong, but then I see a message like ^ and I get it. Man, you're so off. Your statement seems to COMPLETELY disregard the fact that film and stage are two COMPLETELY different mediums. Argh! Again, I'm usually not a thread basher, but this thread's leader seems to be SO off track. Am I alone on this one?
I did not like the film at all. The original songs written for the film were HORRIBLE. So boring. I would not want to see it on stage. Updated On: 7/25/07 at 01:00 PM
I love the film, but there's so many problems with it. Anna Kendrick was incredible, though. If it had to be on-stage, I think it would be best Off-Broadway.
Doesn't the fact that is a good idea that was poorly executed actually make it a GOOD candidate? Couldn't you keep the core ideas that seemed good, make the characters less stereotypical, and flesh out the storylines better? Of course, none of this overcomes the fact that you'd never get the rights to all the songs in the movie...

I liked "Camp" marginally as a 14 year-old. But the thing I liked most was "The Ladies Who Lunch."

Why should anyone be expected to watch a film more than once to "get it" etc. It hardly deals with any issues in anything more than a superfical glossy manner, and if someone does not like it on first viewing then it is unlikely they will find it growing on them.
It is a dreadful film with one dimensional, forgettable characters. At least it is adequately acted but that counts for nothing in terms of this film's apparent likeness to Rent. As if.

"Honestly, wouldn't you rather see a young, energetic cast performing a new, original and touching version of CAMP more than another tired, old revival of GREASE?"
No. Camp was the High School Musical of 2003. Cute film, but nothing earth-shattering. I remember one decent song near the end, but nothing that begs to be thrown on Broadway.
I'd rather see Grease.
"CAMP was a horrid ABC After-School Special. From the original score to just about every plot-line. Seeing those kids try to recreate magic moments in musical history totally fell flat for me (yes, even the watered-down "Turkey Lurkey Time").
I found it tragic that people embraced this lame piece of cinema. Especially anyone over 16.
My niece (at 20) couldn't even sit thru 30 minutes of it. She thought it was cheesy and not in a good way, either. She was hoping it would go into grounds like THE RULES OF ATTRACTION or something more teen-realistic.
Not the case with this kiddie fest. "
Ya, GREAT!!!! Well not everyone shares your opinion!! What makes you right and him wrong??

So, YOU saw it as adequately ACTED... but dreadful.
Every ONE of you need to make up your minds. It's either good songs or terrible? AWFUL or adequate acting?
You know what? I can see it..... and that's all that's really important to me.
As a matter of fact, I have two DOZEN friends who LOVE the movie and would LOVE to see it on stage! I admit, it doesn't have the whole Riverdance aspect of The Pirate Queen - and the cast is not on roller skates... but, that's okay. Oh, yeah... CAMP is a TERRIBLE idea for a play. I'd sure as heck HATE to see a play about youths doing multiple plays during a summer at a theatre camp! Actually, I can't think of a worse idea.
EXCEPT maybe a tired, old chaperone who sits on stage and plays records.... while a lame old "follies" dream goes through his head. Don't mean to pick on that particular one.... but there are plenty that look just like it! I'd just rather watch "The Boyfriend" and get it over with.
