I don't understand the criticism for Zimmerman's version based on that song list.
There's only so much finagling to be done with the existing score to make it align with the novel.
Not to mention, Caird's version is more in line with Bernstein's "final revision" songlist. And by "more in line," I mean... it more or less IS, in regards to all major numbers (including chorales!).
Zimmerman makes the wise choice of cutting out the clutter in the second act; specifically, "The Venice Gavotte," "The King's Barcarolle," and "Nothing More Than This."
I have seen neither production, but judging by these song lists, Caird's cannot be comparable to Zimmerman's based on Zimmerman's cuts to the score in Act 2. Act 1 has been essentially set in stone for all productions for a while, excepting those chorales and what version of "Auto Da Fe" is used.
Zimmerman's 2nd act, musically, is more streamlined- which is a more advisable take on this score.
