CAT fails to recoup. Nobody cares about LUCKY GUY.
Celebrity is dying! Isn't it awesome!
The failure of the production had nothing to do with Johansson, I completely agree with Brantley that she was giving a good performance with the potential to be great in a bad production that never took advantage of its leading lady. If they had bothered to hire a great director (and a stronger leading man) this would have been a huge hit. A VIEW FROM THE BRIDGE was one of the most special productions I've seen on stage, I wanted this to reach those levels so badly. It's unfortunate it didn't work out but it had little to do with Johansson's performance.
NOBODY wants to see it? According to Reidel, it will open to a 10M advance? These boards are NOT a microcosm of what's happening "out there".
"Liev Schreiber has been in a bunch of main stream films. Wolverine, Manchurian Candidate, Sum of All Fears, Kate & Leopold, The Omen, all three Scream movies. These aren't huge hits, but I don't think you're accurately accessing his career".
I think what makes him better known is that his roles are easier to remember. For me, he is Sabretooth from "Wolverine" and the first guy who is killed in Scream 3.
I was sure I had seen Ciarán Hinds playing a politician somewhere (my guess was "24"), but I couldn't remember where. He will be easier to remember now that he's playing a major role in "Game of Thrones".
I think, though, it is a fair point that Liev *is* an actor most regular movie goers will recognize and probably even like, but his name isn't really (IMHO) all that well known. He still seems to get a lot of the "oh wow it's that guy--I love that guy" reaction from casual movie goers I know. Ciaran would probably get that, but with even less people recvognizing him, but...
So they DID drop the "Ghost Skipper" thing by the time it opened?
In regards to theatre size, it did seem that everyone thought it was too big a venue. The original opened in the Morosco which I think had around 1000 seats.
Even though it's a big play in terms of cast members, it's really a pretty small play. Most of the scenes involve just two people talking. I think it would have been really interesting to put it in Circle in the Square where the audience is right there on top of the actors, and make it a really stripped down raw production. But Ashford isn't that kind of director and didn't know what to do, so he just gave us flare and gimmicks.
And yes the Ghost Skipper was cut by the time the show opened. Not sure if the actor got let go or was still there.

Thats too bad..but I have to say, I wasn't buying Scarlet as Maggie the Cat! I had front row seats, and maybe that was part of the issue....but I saw her check in/check out a few times during the show. And, any time she needed to cry...the misery in her face for the 5 minutes leading to the tear was unbearable. And she was the ONLY one to flub her lines. Everyone else was fantastic: Cirian, Benjamin, Debra...they were outstanding! I really wish they wouldnt have gone with a "star" for Maggie... Plus side, shes absolutely gorgeous, and has a long lucrative career in the film industry ahead of her! Oh, and she'll probably get a tony nom out of it.

My guess is you are thinking of that TV show with Sigourney Weaver...Political Animals?
Thanks, willep, that was it. It's his most recent role that comes to mind.
I don't remember him at all in "The Woman in Black", "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" (too much make-up?), "Munich" or "Road to Perdition", but I don't remember many details of those movies either.
