That is odd. Isn't there something in Equity about having understudys/standbys for leading roles?
Regardless, this is terrible news and my heart goes out to Norbert and his family. By all accounts, they were a very close family growing up and the loss is increased by the manner of her death.
Sad.

Equity would not allow that. They're required to have understudies.

What horrible news! She was stabbed to death?! And from the article BWW just posted it sounds like Jennifer Hudson was also stabbed but survived! How awful.

The fact is that understudies are rarely ready before the first preview. Hell, the leads rarely are. It was a wise choice to cancel. Let's not second-guess them.

eta: BWW needs to fix that error fast. It makes them look like idiots.

I agree, ghostlight2. Which is why I believe the first two shows were cancelled. I really don't see Norbert being able to perform this weekend, and my guess is they are using these two days to frantically prepare the understudy for the weekend.

I really can't imagine going back to work so quickly after such a tragedy.
I'd be out for months.

(Edit) I posted that news here because the mods deleted the thread I started.

Why they would delete a thread about free tickets to a pre-broadway try out is beyond me...

What a very odd thread to announce "great news" in.

Condolences to the Butz family.

I heard about the murder yesterday on the local news (I live in the Seattle area), but the news didn't make the connection (nor did I) to Norbert until today, when I was watching the noon news, where they finally made mention of the canceled shows. What a horrible tragedy.

Two more shows will be added next week. Even though I had tickets for this week's previews, they did the right thing to cancel.

Condolences to the Butz family.

Truth be told, we know I have never been a fan of Butz in his projects, but I would give that man a standing ovation every time he walked onto and off of that stage. It takes a LOT of strength to be in hsi shoes and do this show.

I hope the fans are respectful to Butz and don't go to the stage door to say "Sorry about your sister."

I think he will need his space.

I suspect he won't stage door @ all @ 1st but leave thru a seperate entrance/exit for exactly that reason.

If it were me - I wouldn't do the show.

A little known fact is that in the original screenplay, Pan's Labyrinth was Pan's FLAByrinth. Hmmmmmmm...glad they changed it.

The old adage "the show must go on" aside, perhaps he takes comfort in his work. In any case, as horrible as this incident is, no matter what he did for a living, eventually he has to go back to it. He's mourning his sister, he's grieving with his family, but life goes on, and a lot of people are counting on him. There isn't much else he can do - it's in the hands of the police now. We can only hope they get this guy.

More info on the arrested.

So sad that Norbert, his family and his sister's partner suffer this senseless and cruel loss.

I wish them consolation and fortitude in carrying on in their lives.

Very well said, Ghostlight.

Just because you return to work doesn't mean your grieving/mourning is all over. Even people that lose a SPOUSE seldom miss more than a week of work. You can only let it consume you for a short period of time. You NEED to let your mind be active. You NEED normal in your life. Singing and acting and being a part of the show IS normal for him.
