"School of Rock" could actually be great, in different hands.

What's really sad is that people can't let other people enjoy pieces of art without calling it dumb or a "crap fest." Not everything is going to be your cup of tea. Get over it.

What everybody writes on this board are only opinions. All the professional critics writings are only opinions. If I want to say that "Cats" is a crap fest, it's my opinion - GET OVER IT.
How sad that "Last Ship" "Side Show" can't find an audience and yet this crap fest comes back.
For the people who want to see Cats and don't want to see The Last Ship or Side Show, it's not sad at all. A revival of one of the most successful musicals in Broadway history doesn't sound like "the dumbing down of Broadway continues". Unless by "Broadway" you mean it to be something which it is not.
Looking at several clips, it looks like it's just a carbon copy of the original. The choreography is for the most the part the same as the original and the interpretation is the same. Sad. Really wanted something new. Why go pay for this when I can go watch the same thing on dvd? and for free.

Even if they cut the 10 truly awful numbers from the show, it would still rate a "D" in my book. I will say that the set is really good.

Cats is far from a great show. No plot just two hours of cats running around singing about how they are cats. Memory is the only song worth listening too. I sincerely hope it doesn't come
Cats is the third-longest running show in Broadway history. Why? Because people like it. Of course it’s going to be revived – it’s a cash cow. I myself like Cats – the show, that is. I’m indifferent to actual cats – although I do like watching big cats on nature programs.
I saw the Broadway production Cats, as well as the Toronto production. It’s an entertaining song/dance show that appeals to all ages. It seems quite a number of people on this board don’t like it, but tough. If you don’t like it, don’t see it. But no need to be a hater and harp on it again and again.
>>> And the dumbing down of Broadway continues.
You realize that the “lyrics” were written by T.S. Eliot, don’t you? Hardly “dumbing down.”

On the contrary, I would argue that CATS has virtually the same plot as A Chorus Line.

What does any of that have to do with this revival being a carbon copy of the original? I love cats, but I'm not going to pay 80 dollars for carbon copy uninspired revival.

Some of you people make me laugh. You think Broadway exists just for you and you alone. There are millions of tourists who have never seen CATS. If a show captures the tourist trade, they've made it, which should be obvious to you.
And guess what - there are actually LOCAL people, REAL sophisticates, who liked it.

Because live performances > DVD copies??? 1998? The last production of Cats on Broadway closed 15 years ago. There's a whole generation of people, aspiring artists, tourists, etc. who haven't had the chance to see it on the Great White Way. And like me, there's a whole group of people who never had the chance to see the original and would kill to see it live on Broadway. Just because it wasn't completely revamped doesn't mean it has lost value as a project. The original ran for 18 years. If it's not broke, don't fix it.

"The Original London Cast Recording of CATS won the 1982 Grammy Award for Best Cast Album. The next year the Original Broadway Cast Recording won the same award."
