What is the relationship between the CD's sold in theaters and the cast recordings?
If/Then cast recording was being sold in the theater, but the official release date in not until June 3rd.
Are they are the same recording? Different packaging?

The CDs sold at the theater are the cast recording. It's the exact same. It's just being sold early.
If they are ready early, they theater will definitely sell them before the release date.
The only difference? The price. Nearly always more expensive at the theater. Last weekend I saw Gentleman's Guide (loved it, btw) and they were selling the cd for 25 bucks (common price for cds at the theater), I think I payed 12.99 on iTunes.
It takes longer to "set up" a CD's release to traditional retail. It's much easier for the label to get a quantity to a Broadway theatre...but as has been mentioned, you'll pay a price to own it early. Then again, I always marveled at people purchasing cast albums at Colony Records back in the day!

Yeah, I bought Gentlemen's Guide for $11.99. My FYE price matches anyone.
I thought it would be the same. My wife wanted to buy it for $20, but I had pre-ordered it about a month ago on Amazon.

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't ITunes only the songs- no physical CD, Packaging or Booklet.
Yes just the songs which is why I like the physical cd.
Most of the time you can access the booklet on your computer. (Just not on your phone.)
I use to feel that way, too, Roxy, but not so much anymore.
