Hi. I got a room at the EconoLodge Times Square (302 West 47th St.) for 189 a night (Tues. June 10, Wed. June 11, Thurs. June 12). That comes out to $569.96... BUT with taxes and fees ($112.35)... the grand total for 3 nites is $682.31. I guess that's a reasonable price for a Theatre District hotel. I used Orbitz to make this reservation on Dec. 2, 2007. from RC in Austin, Texas
Try the Mildford Plaza, it's right next to Phantom!

I know you said that hostels are "out of the question"; but you may want to rethink this. I've stayed at the youth hostel near Columbia. Here's the link:

It wasn't a bad experience and they do have some private rooms.
It's just short subway ride away from all of the Times Square action.

Check the Broadway Inn.
It's right next to the Richard Rodgers and is pretty cheap, and provides pretty comfortable rooms.
There is always the cardboard box option too. Cheapest way to go, unless you have to buy the box first. LOL! I'm totally kidding.
I just suggested this to be funny. Also, I might end up living in one starting next month if I can't pay rent to my parents to stay in the house. LOL! I'm trying to get a second job to get more money, and to be out of the house more. But if I end up being homeless, I'll go to New York because it will be so much better than living on the front lawn at my house.
I just stayed at the Hotel Carter which is on 43rd in the heart of the theatre district. It is no-frills, but you do get a private bath and it's cheap. A room for four people (two double beds) will run you about $170 a night.
I stayed in the Super 8 on 46th it was a couple blocks from times square. 150 a night. The room was just fine.
I would recommend Travel Inn on 515 West 42nd Street. I stayed there recently for my trip to NYC. Its a ten minute walk to most of the theaters. Its about $180 per night for a room with two beds, you can't get too many deals better than that. Plus, there's free parking, so if you're driving into the city that's a plus.

"If anyone finds a better deal let me know"
No offense coolkid, but since this is YOUR trip, why do YOU try looking for a cheap hotel. You clearly HAVE the internet...do a google search and see what comes up.

Just check outside of the theater district! The subway is super easy to navigate, and you can get way better deals if you're willing to stay uptown or even further downtown, like Herald Square area.
If budget is THE primary concern, you can't beat the Riverside Tower Hotel on 81st and Riverside. The rooms are small and kind of shabby, but clean, and I doubt you'll find a cheaper hotel that has private bathrooms. The location is awesome, and I had a really good experience staying there.

Try the West Side YMCA (near Lincoln Center). Safe, Clean, very much like a youth hostel. Pretty affordable.
Bring flip flops for the showers and ear plugs for sleeping. When the doors slam in the hallway, you can TOTALLY hear it.
I took a Tylenol PM, used ear-plugs and moved my head away from the door - then sleeping was fine.
Good bargain and nicely located for Theatre going.
The best deal in town I've found. Is the Park Savoy Hotel on 58th St between 7th and 8th. The cost is $205.00 a night for 2 double beds. And all taxes are included in the rate. Its not the Ritz, but it is clean. joe

The Carter was just named one of the dirtiest hotels in the world...take it for what it's worth.
Check Travelzoo.com, which links you to deals with individual hotels. They have bupkis at the moment but keep checking back. My kids and I booked a two-bed suite at the Embassy Suites way downtown through them for $199 a night for the 12th & 13th. It's since sold out.
I'd also suggest applecorehotels.com, but as several have said, it's getting next to impossible to find anything under $200...

We recently stayed at the Courtyard Marriott Times Square South on West 40th for $199/night. Go to their website and click on deals to get their discounted prices. Can't say that it is still that price, b ut was a great place to stay.
Via Travelocity I got a good deal at the Holiday Inn Times Square, on West 39th and 8th if memory serves me. Strictly speaking, I think it's in the garment district, but still very close (within walking distance) to the theater district. The rooms were a bit small but very clean, and we were happy with it. Make sure you check for senior rates and/or student rates if they apply. Good luck!
I stay at the Broadway Inn every time. I wouldn't have it any other way.
Thank the weak $ for the cost of hotels in NYC. Europeans are flocking here on merchandise buying trips and to them a $250.00 room in a world class town like NYC is cheap when figuring in the exchange rate. Look for the hotel rates to keep going up, up, up.

There's also the Vanderbilt YMCA on 47th between 2nd & 3rd Ave., if you don't mind walkng crosstown.

I got a deal from Expedia (Canada) on plane tickets and a week at The Paramount hotel. It wasn't exactly CHEAP, but it wasn't bad either...
I think a room there is kind of expensive normally, though.
Here's a link to the Paramount's website, for the hell of it:

you should DEFINITELY check The POD hotel out. The rooms look really cool. I will be staying there the nights of the 4th and the 5th and for those 2 nights it cost us $334.00.
"The Carter was just named one of the dirtiest hotels in the world...take it for what it's worth."
I wouldn't recommend the Carter to someone I utterly despise. I had to stay there once because I couldn't get anything else on very short notice.
The smell alone could kill.
I still think my cardboard box option is great. :) Or you could illegally pitch a tent in Central or Bryant Park. There has to be some restrooms around there.
or you could find an abandoned apartment and become squatters.
