You said that all the threads on cheap hotels are old...Do you think that since the threads are old, the hotels no longer exist? I searched through them and got some very good recommendations, many of which I see in this thread.
I'm staying at the Big Apple Hostel in a private room this July. $80 a night, has great reviews, great location.
I love the idea of the Cardboard box option.....
But an Abandoned Apartment?..I thought Donald Trump bought all the land up in Manhattan....

I just got back from the Milford Plaza Hotel today. It only cost me $135.00 plus taxes a night. I found it on Hotwire. If you get a 2 and 1/2 star hotel in the theatre district for that price that's the Milford Plaza. I personally thought it was nicer than a 2 and 1/2 star hotel. I hated the elevators though. I have motion sickness and they are really bad for that...lol.

$135 a night? I checked Hotwire and didn't find that deal can u PM the way I could get a deal like that?
I've stayed at the Milford b4 and really enjoyed it, it is in a GREAT location.
I couldn't find that on Hotwire for some reason
I liked the Ramada New Yorker, which is nice and clean, located within walking distance of the theatre district. Look for prices on priceline and sights of that kind.

coolkid, it said you don't accept PM's. Anyway I just looked on Hotwire for that night and it's offered for $179.00.

my recommendation--the Wellington Hotel. It's right next to Carnegie Hall. Within walking distance of the theater district. My husband and I stayed there last year and it was about $175 a night. Hotel was clean and decent. We walked virtually everywhere from there--Broadway, Lincoln Center, Times Squares--lots of good (fairly inexpensive) food places nearby too. We were impressed with the place and would definitely stay there again next time we are in NYC.
I've stayed @ Radio City Apts several times. While u can get a great rate after years of "flying under the radar" it has become very popular and i have been having trouble finding available space. The Mayfair (49th + 8th) is also pretty reasonable.
